I don't know what kind of crazy stuff you used to do, but we're all on our own trajectories towards needing OHS. Some people have 40 years of warning that we'll need surgery (like me) and others get about five minutes of warning. I'm not sure which is worse!
BTW I've got a mechanical valve so I'm on warfarin and it has had no impact on my wine/beer consumption. The point is to be consistent with your intake
The surgery is not as awful as some people (usually those who haven't had it) make it out to be. It's a slow recovery but the benefits are totally worth it! Best of luck from down under.
