I first want to apologize for suddenly quit posting about Teddy?s recovery. All of you have been so supportive and I can?t imagine going through this without you-thanks so much. I think the support one receives from a place like this and from all of you is underestimated. It was what kept me going everyday to know I had a place I could go and received such love and caring from so many.
Well the story is that when Teddy was three weeks post ?op I started with dizziness, imbalance, and other symptoms that everyone was telling me was stress related. Well to make an involved story short, my MRI was highly suspicious of MS (multiple sclerosis). After more extensive testing and putting together my history the diagnosis has been confirmed and a second opinion given by an MS specialist at Univ.of Mich. Teddy is now seven weeks post op so this has been a whirlwind. I am at early stages in this acceptance process but I am very positive and surrounding myself with as much information I can handle and currently just working on getting over this MS crisis I am currently having. I am being treated with IV steroids this week and will start next week on one of the newer Interferon ?Beta meds that are showing miraculous results in controlling this disease. As you might imagine the person in my life who seems to understand how I am feeling better than anyone else and is always saying just the right things is Teddy. I think having had his cardiac problems for so long and his surgeries allows him to truly understand some of the things I am dealing with and it has been therapeutic for him to focus on me and not himself as much. He is a caring guy and we have really bonded through this experience.

Teddy has had a slower recovery than we had anticipated but his surgery was much more involved than was planned. His twin cousins who Teddy is very close to announced last week that as of Friday Teddy was truly Teddy again (laughing, telling jokes and his usual self). He lost over 30# but is now eating more, feeling like himselfand arguing with his brothers. He has never questioned his mechanical valves, seems very grateful that he is okay and is managing his meds and Coumadin levels by himself (somewhat out of necessity). He now wants to get a job for the summer which was unimaginable a few weeks ago. He knows he will have to start slowly.

I know I don?t have a cardiac related problem but I now have such a better understanding of how it feels to have a health problem that isn?t necessarily going away and needs to be managed like all of you do so well. Having such a supportive network like this provides is so crucial. Thanks again to everyone and I look forward very soon to be on the giving end of this site soon and not feeling like I am always taking?..Cindy

Cindy,

Sorry to hear about the MS, Words on a screen can only give so much support, I am glad your ( healthier ) son is there for you, he sounds like a great young man.

I dont think you ever purely give or take from a site like this, when someone asks a question or needs support they raise issues that help other people deal with their situation. Keep posting -- and be assured you are not taking or giving -- but sharing...

All the best,
Burair.

Dear Cindy,
What a blow, but I'm so glad that Teddy is so supportive and that you are going to be getting the newest and most hopeful treatment. You have always been on the giving side of this forum and Burair couldn't have put it better- keep sharing! Our thoughts and prayers will be with you both.

congratulations to Teddy. We are proud of him.

It is such sad news that you have brought to us this morning. I am so sorry to hear about your dx of MS. I don't know what new advances there are lately, but we all know, via the telethon, that they are working around the clock every day for new discoveries and cures. Perhaps your particular version of this dreaded disease is treatable in a very positive way. Don't ever give up (Nancy's motto). We are here when you need - or want.

Amen!!!!

Excellent way to put it, Burair :).

Cindy,
It's good to see you post again. Very sorry about the MS, but glad to know that Teddy is back to his old self again!

Cindy:
Good to hear that Teddy is Teddy again. If his cousins say so, he must be!

Sorry to hear about the MS diagnosis. However, there is so much more that can be done for this disease today. A friend who is about 50 was diagnosed with lupus (SLE) at about 21; in the last 10 years she she was also diagnosed with MS & a couple of other diseases. She has done extremely well, despite having a combination of diseases. She's an extremely busy person.
I will be sending many good vibes your way!!!!!!!!

It's good that Teddy has taken control of his meds and testing, and is moving forward. Arguing with siblings is indeed a measure of the return to normalcy!

Your own status is unfortunate, but you have stepped up to the plate with it, and are showing the same, stubborn strength that has been there for Teddy all this time. It is a tribute to your parenting that Teddy has also risen to the occasion, and is sharing your trials with you. That's a bond that will continue to grow.

I hope that the new interferon treatment is effective for you, and you have a long and stellar remission. And even when Teddy is back to his wild and crazy self, please don't forget to post. Once in VR, always in VR...

Very best wishes,

That is a significant sign Cindy. Our closest friends were my measurement for a return to the "normal" self, only their comment was "You must be feeling good because 'the bitch is back' ".  I should have been mad at them, but it let me know I was approaching normal because they felt they could give me a hard time again.
