headaches

I was on a beta blocker before the surgery and the headaches stopped. Had them really bad when I was in my 30s. Read somewhere that beta blockers are use to treat migraines. When I see the cardio Dr., I will discuss this with him. I really detest getting them since I do not like being laid up for at least 24 hours. By the way, I log onto Heartcenteronline and this site has been mentioned as to where to go to get some input on valve issues. Have a great day everyone,;)

I am actually surprised to see that many are taking aspirin along with Coumadin on a long term basis. Directly post op they had me on this regimen. Continued on to acquire cardiac tamponade. Major bleed around the lining of the heart. My INR was logged at 4.0. They told me to stay and not decrease. 5 days later I was a 14. Rushed back to surgery to drain 2 litres of blood/fluid from around my heart. Other organs were effected as well. Though my experience is an extremre example, I am darn fortunate to be alive and of sound mind today.

Would this scenario have occurred if my MD was more diligent in regulation of my Coumadin? Answer. No. Would it have happened if I did not have a fresh surgical site? Answer most likely not. Would it have occured if I were educated and not thrown a prescription of Coumadin without ANY instructions. Just take these. Like it was no big deal. What did I know. I was sick. Just a pill to pop every day. Right? Soon learned the hard way that is not the case. It was not up to me at that point in time to decide how much or little medication to take. (You better beleive it is at this point!!!!) Home testing!

So....in the long run aspirin therapy for those taking Coumadin may be safe further out from surgery. And or under the direction of an MD that is properly monitoring his patients. Given my experience....I will never take that combination again!

Several weeks ago I gave up taking aspirin because I knew that coumadin would be in my near future....and it was. It was not an easy thing for me to do since it controlled my arthritis pain so well. I am glad that I did that as I really want to minimize my risks of bleeding.

That being said, I am going to have to address the issue regarding pain and stiffness post-op and work out some sort of solution.

Both of my daughter-in-laws take imitrex for migraines....(I wonder what they have in common?) and have some success controlling them. I have no idea if it is contraindicated with valvers but it may well be.

I hope you soon find something that helps.

I was on beta blocker before surgery due to migranes. Now I went on toprol due to fast pulse after my second surgery. My doctor also put me on a baby aspirin a couple of weeks ago because I was having these weird spells where my eyes would be completely unfocused and my whole head felt weird. Knock on wood the baby aspirin has helped. He had said coumadin thins the blood but the platelettes are still sticky so the baby aspirin makes them not quite so sticky. This will help them not stick to the new valve and then be released and travel to my head and cause these spells.

The way the surgeon explained it that each did something. So far I haven't had any problems with bleeding. Last protime was 2.7. Now my dentist wants my protime readings sent to him. Didn't ask for this before. I am going to have some dental work done but not to next month. Has anyone else had to do this?

Thanks, I checked it out and now understand why he would want copies.

A combination pill containing
acetominphen (tylenol) 250 mgm OK? with warfarin
aspirin 250 mgm : too much, particularly if repeated ,
caffeine 65 mgm OK but a good cup of java better.

There are better pills out there for migraine. See a good neurologist if not happy withn PCP.For severe headache
and short term use darvocet and percoset are good but need a prescription.Always beware of combination over the counter pills particularly if you do not know each ingredient.

MHarris - the other thing to be aware of is the need to constantly keep hydrated. For some reason, since surgery, I am especially succeptible to dehydration, and the symptoms come on really fast. My symptoms are dizzyness and blurred vision, and only a large drink of water will help. On these hot days, I reccommend everyone carry their water bottle with them. my last episode occurred a couple of weeks ago while waiting for the drug store to open. I had had several cups of coffed for breakfast and certainly was not thirsty, but luckily I recognized the sympotms and got to the grocery in time to buy bottled water before it got really serious.

I can't take Excederin because it contains caffein and that messes with my heart's rhythm. So if you have arrhythmia associated with your valve disorder or replacement, I'd be careful of Excederin for that reason as well.

My family practicioner put me on Vioxx for 3 days each month for "female" reasons. He chose Vioxx because he was told it interferes the least with Coumadin. Now I'm going to rush to www.warfarinfo.com to check that out.
