I wonder how often heart surgery patients have systemic inflammatory response syndrome. The hospital where I was to have surgery this morning has had a problem and is looking into it - is it a regional or national problem from a supplier of materials that go into the heart lung machine. My surgery was planned for today just when the news broke. I guess my cold was a blessing in disguise.

Wow! Have not heard of this before, but you sure are lucky it came to light before surgery. Best wishes for the future and let us know what new surgery date is planned.

Now that is scary! I had never heard of systemic inflammatory response syndrome before this, and I hope I never encounter it.

Ross told you that there must be a reason for the postponement; now we know what it was! :)

Keep us updated on any developments in the situation at the hospital.

Have you thought of switching to another hospital? I noticed that the hospital has only one heart surgeon on staff.

Yes, catwoman, I'm considering other places - particularly those most familiar with response to SIRS since I have an immune type disease and I understand SIRS variability in mortality may have something to do with how the immune system responds. I also have celiac disease as I have discussed in another thread a few days ago.

If the problem is a national supplier then perhaps other hospitals had the problem but didn't come forward so I'm following the news on this. I preferred a local hospital because of all the complicated arrangements I have to make for diet et al but now I'll have to adapt to the new situation.

Thanks for sharing that information with us. It is extremely interesting. Your viral infection may well have been a blessing in disguise. I'm glad you aren't in the hospital as another one of the patients having severe problems.

Yes bvdr, I feel very fortunate - one patient died according to the paper today. My original intention was for surgery at the end of August or first week of September before cold/flu season but after summer boating. But I changed my plans when I found out my cardiologist was going to be on vacation during that time.

I'm surprised SIRS hasn't shown up in VR.com community discussions before.
It is quite common from the bypass pump according to google searches. No one understands why some get it big time and some don't.

update: FDA recall

update: FDA recall

Today's local paper says, "An "urgent drug recall" announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is linked to the death of one heart patient and the illness of two others at Mary Washington Hospital.,..." See http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2005/092005/09202005/130958

"The company says that two lots of its cardioplegia solution contained "Gram negative rods," a type of bacteria.,... Central Admixture says in its letter that it supplies its products to hospitals in Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. It advises customers to immediately quarantine the recalled products.,,....It's not clear how many hospitals purchased Central Admixture products. The recall includes 18 types of cardioplegia solution and 11 types of other injectable medicines."

One wonders if other hospitals had similar problems but weren't able to identify this as the cause.

I'm glad they were able to locate the source of the bacteria. 18 of one and 11 of another is a pretty big recall. :(
