Another survivor!
My husband, 43 and just knowing about his need for surgery 3 weeks prior to surgery, had his surgery (AVR) this Wed am. Today is Sat; he just moved from ICU to Cardiac floor yesterday and is doing very well. Sitting up for hours a day, will be walking today, and has minimal discomfort. One of the MOST comforting things to him prior to the surgery, that we read on this site, was "the week before the surgery is worse than the surgery itself" (paraphrased because I can't remember who said it, and exact wording). This really helped him get through a lot of the pre-surgery anxiety. Also helpful was a visit from the "Mended Hearts" association at the hospital the afternoon before the surgery (he was checked in the day before to have a heart cath prior to surgery).
You all are a tremendous resource of support for us newbies as we've been so suddenly thrown into this world of valve replacement!
Truly grateful for the skill of the surgeon and the guiding hands of the "Great Physician",
KC (for her husband)
