Had a slightly scratchy throat starting Wednesday, Thursday evening throat was inflamed and painful, with a white spot on right tonsil . I had an extreme chill, crawled into bed fully clothed trying to get warm. Friday I had surgical interview and also talked with my cardiologist (another issue). Both said plenty of fluids, etc, call surgeon's office Monday if a fever developed or it went to my chest. So far no fever, but also no coughing, no cold sloppiness, just a very painful tonsil and occasional chest tightness which I think is anxiety.
Should it have turned into a cold by now (3 days) or is it likely tonsillitis? There is a terrible coughing cold going around, but I had it in December.
I really don't to delay surgery, plus doctor is going on vacation after my surgery, but I don't want to be irresponsible.
Please get out your crystal balls and tell me what will happen!

NO GO if your sick. You do not need anything extra to hamper your recovery effort. If your sick, call it off until your better.

Debby,

I had that type of congestion before my surgery there, too, and it was postponed for a month. As I recall, my preferred surgeon's vacation intervened also (think he's a skier), but I actually preferred him coming back, rested and relaxed, as well as my being thoroughly over the crud before surgery. As many surgeries as he does, I certainly don't begrudge him a vacation. Of course, if it is urgent to have the surgery earlier, there are other excellent surgeons in his group.

As for the bracelet incident, there are, unfortunately, tactless individuals in every big organization, and evidently you encountered one. I will just say I ran into nothing similar at Inova -- received only kindness and compassionate care. I pray that will be your experience from now on, too. Hope you feel a lot better and everything goes smoothly for you.

Cheers,

I had a sore throat before surgery so I went to my PCP who prescribed antibiotics (just in case). I guess they felt this would be better than a delay.

My surgery was postponed two weeks for a little congestion in one of my lungs. After going through it, I am happy the surgeon told me to wait. The surgery recovery is very dependent on your lung capacity in my opinion. I would follow what your doctor says; he is the expert.
