After meeting with my preferred surgeon, Dr. Patrick McCarthy at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, a date was set for my ascending aortic repair and valve replacement surgery. It will be on July 15, 2008, six days before my 53rd birthday. I'm hoping my birthday present will be a release from the hospital.

Hope to have some e-mails of positive thoughts and reinforcement. Valve choice is still in the air, but after much thought, consultation and prayer, I now have a leaning to the tissue option. Please pray for me to make the right choice.

I put you on the calendar. Finalize your choice and never look back once you do. I wish you the best regardless of what valve you go for. I pray that you don't have an experience like mine were. :)

I'm glad you have a date and we will all be here to cheer you on to a complete recovery. Ross, is right- never look back- the only bad choice is no operation at all!

Congratulations on setting the date. Whichever valve you choose will be the right choice for you. There's no right or wrong choice, other than choosing not to do anything. Every choice has pros and cons, so weigh them based on what's important to you. Best wishes and good luck.

A new life for your birthday!

What a great present.

You have my prayers.

Don't forget to have waiting for you at home*

your stool softeners, pill box, and...and...and...

a brand new recliner. :D

Just keep in mind that the only wrong choice is not to have surgery. Since you have set a date, whatever valve you decide will work out.

Hoping you have a smooth ride over the mountain.

Godspeed.

May Have Infection/May Postpone Surgery

Update: I've not been feeling quite right for the last few days- sore throat, stabbing ear pain. I go in to work on Wednesday and find two of my staff hacking, one with an obvious "cold". I don't go anywhere near them. When I get home, my throat feels pretty raw. I checked in with the results of the nasal swab taken on 6/26/08- which was negative for bacteria. I'll let my G.P check me today to see if I have an upper respiratory infection which I am prone to because of chronic sinusitis. If I have one, the timing sucks and may postpone my surgery date. I want to get this over with ASAP. Every time I seem to plan something, something else interferes with it. At times, do you feel that if you didn't have bad luck, you'd have no luck at all?
