Even an aging hippie former drug-fiend like myself will concede that there's a big problem with street drugs. What we're currently doing about it doesn't seem to be working. Some say all drugs should be legalized, some say only pot should be decriminalized, some say that criminal sanctions for street should be increased - others say that all that will do is increase street prices for illegal drugs, keep the criminal element involved, and have adulterated drugs being sold. Yet others say that our focus instead should be on providing treatment to addicts, and try to minimize the harm that drugs do instead of trying to prohibit them outright (e.g. much like we repealed Prohibition, but then established treatment programs for alcoholics and established laws prohibiting selling alcohol to minors, drinking in public, and drunk driving).
I'm actually more interested in hearing other folks' opinions than pontificating on my own: How do folks think we should deal with illegal drugs?
