Staying the Course -- May 26, 2020

Just a quick week opener. Will come back later.

Memorial Day was quiet around here, for the most part. Beaches were busy, and real downer has been bursts of gunfire a couple of times involving gang members who came from other areas to settle their scores across oceanside's main drag, thus endangering a lot of innocent folks. Police rounded them up quickly and they'll face serious consequences in court. But city leaders worrying about how to prevent this kind of stuff from happening again.

Taking wife back to dermatologist this morning -- still battling skin problems on lower legs. With thought that partly could be med reaction, I got her GP to switch to a different BP prescription. As for me, I'm going to have to try to schedule a Covid-delayed visit to the dentist to do some repairs where an old crown fell out.

And I need to get a haircut! Got an appointment for my wife with her stylist later this week, but nothing for me. Maybe I will just go ahead and let my wife trim my locks -- which she has been volunteering to do.

Unusual times the past 3 months, to say the least. A lot of people are hoping for emerging into a "new normal." Personally, I am holding out for plain old normal. But the future's not ours to see....

Went to bed last night and it was just a little depression with a 30 percent chance of developing. Wake up this morning and it is Tropical Storm Bertha right off our Carolina coastline with 45 mph sustained winds and torrential rain. Thunderstorms for sure, waterspouts possible. Flash flood warning just now. Life is never dull here.

Good reminder to get prepared for hurricane season, which "officially" begins June 1. Batteries, flashlights, lanterns, radios, tarps, stock of non-perishable food, lots of water. All that and more for sheltering in place, which we've done okay for Category 1 hurricanes, and borderline 2. An imminent direct hit by Category 3 to 5, and evacuation would be in order. But to where? Got to have a family plan. We have three households with multiple dogs and cats, all of which must be protected. Need a certain go-to place. August/September/October is prime time for hurricanes. Got to plan now though. Thank you for the wake-up call, Bertha.

And amid all this, the pandemic to deal with.

We may have unpleasant weather much of the year, but I’m glad we don’t have storms that can kill us. Good luck with your doomsday preparations.

Good luck with your disaster preparations. I hope these hurricanes and other stuff decide(?) to change course and move East, sparing the East Coast and, perhaps, the islands that would otherwise be in their way.

Here in the Los Angeles area, it's supposed to be 101 today. Hot and dry. And only getting hotter as summer descends upon us.
