To all our Stay the Course faithful, have a safe and happy Independence Day!

I sure got my exercise today running around town getting provisions for DW's big feasting plans for the family cookout! As long as I let the grandkids eat most of it, I will be okay on weight maintenance.

Lots of turmoil in our country and our world. I remain confident that the aspirations for freedom and liberty set forth in the Declaration of Independence will not fade away but remain our guiding light.

Cheers to all,

Superbob

Thank you, Paleogirl -- that steak dinner sounds good! Guess we're sticking with hot dogs and burgers on the grill, but that's good too. Speaking of too, I need to stick to two not three, four or five of them.

Happy 4th of July Superbob et al. It does seem like a holiday weekend brings with it too many high calorie temptations. But we can climb back on the count calories wagon Monday morning. Last Wednesday I had my first post-op echo and follow up with my cardiologist. I got a great report.. The valve looks fine, the gradients are real low, and there is no leakage. I'm not having any arrhythmia. My only medication is a daily aspirin at this point, so all of this makes for a pretty good state of affairs four months post-op. I finally got my wallet card from St. Jude in the mail, so now I'm a card-carrying valver.

Happy 4th!! I have not been one of the faithful but I do drop in from time to time. I've lost eleven pounds since returning from vacation. Boy!!! .... we got out of Greece at the right time!!! With all that our country has going on it's still the greatest place on earth!!!

Jim, sounds like all is going super for you!!! Great big thumbs up!!!!

Cooker out.......................

I'm here, but we've been trying to catch up on projects that were put on hold due to nonstop weekend jaunts out of town. DH is painting a closet and I'm getting ready to paint trim. Pretty boring stuff. Congrats, Jim, on your four month progress. I hope it's all smooth sailing from here on out. Good work, Cooker, on dropping the weight. Superbob, the Cardinals winning yesterday's game reinforces my belief that all's right with the world!

Cooker, great to see you! Eleven pounds -- wow! Congrats on that -- come on back here when you can and tell us how you did it.

Jim, that is super about your post-op echo and cardio follow-up -- sounds like everything is going very well.

I forget if I mentioned it here or not, but I got an echo report with a small (hopefully) red flag. Cardio said my left atrium seems to have enlarged a bit - about 1/2 a centimeter. She scheduled another echo for 6 months. Said if it proves to be something going on might cause heart rhythm irregularities in the future, which hopefully could be addressed by meds. I do know that over the years -- since my 30s (a long, long time ago) various doctors have remarked that I have a large heart, a few have even called it an athlete's heart, which I took as a compliment. And I know also that echoes are not always exact. But I've got all this to think about -- and further motivation to concentrate on diet and exercise. (More immediate problem, my dentist and hygienest discovered in a cleaning that I have a slight infection under an old crown, and I am supposed to go to a dental specialist for a root canal and then back to the dentist for a re-crowning. Ack, ack, and more ack! But I suppose as the proud owner of a piggy valve, I can't afford to ignore this infection.

We had a nice family Fourth. Think I will write about it a bit now on my blog, which is at www.steadfastdawgwalker.com if any STCers would like further reading.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend...

And oh yes, GO USA! USA women' soccer team going for the World Cup tonight at 7 against a good Japanese team. My household will continue to root especially hard for midfielder Lauren Holiday, who was so sweet (along with her NBA-player husband, Jrue Holiday) to my athletic granddaughter Hannah at an Under Armor photoshoot in New Orleans. Lauren typically stops the other team's advances and then sets up her teammates for shots on goal -- a very unselfish player. But she has the kicking power to boom one in goal -- and we would love it if she happened to kick the winning goal tonight! Anyway, it's a great team -- much fun to watch. Go USA!

PS: Duffey, yes, all was well with the world yesterday when the Cardinals snapped out of a mini-slump (enough to score 2 runs and beat the Padres). But do you know they go on the road tomorrow for 4 games against the Cubs and then 4 against the Pirates? Tense times ahead -- why, oh why, do I not lighten up -- it is, after all, "just a game." Gulp.

Thanks for asking, Duffey. I am feeling so much better. Thank God for meds. They aren't the whole answer but they are lifesavers when needed. I really felt like I would never feel happy or even be able to be touched or relieved for a few moments by a beautiful sunset or a child's smile or a kind gesture or anything, ever again - all FOR NO REASON and it felt like it came on so fast and strong. Thank you everyone for your prayers and well wishes for me.

How about that Lauren Holiday, Superbob!! You all must have cheered when she scored in the final. Did you know she had open heart surgery at age 3? Just learned that. So you two have something else in common besides being beloved by your granddaughter.

I'm tubby but one thing at a time. Good job on the weight loss Cooker. Looks like lack of accountability works great for you. : ) And Skeptic I am thrilled for you that you got such a good report. Yay!!

Wonderful to hear you are feeling better, dornole! Yes, sometimes our meds do help.

Yes indeed, we cheered wildly when Lauren scored that goal -- and we marveled at Carli Lloyd's hat trick, especially that 53-yarder -- amazing! Hooray for our USA team -- they did us proud!

Good deal, Dornole! Superbob, I'm watching the Cubs play the Redbirds this afternoon. Not fun, but maybe the next game will be better.

Yep, I figured Cards would lose this afternoon but have a better shot this evening because both teams are forced to throw untested call-ups out there to pitch. Maybe a bunch of runs will be scored, who knows?
