A new year -- stayin' the course, stayin' the course! Best wishes to all yawl -- wishes for a safe, healthy, and happy New Year!

We had a ball in Nashville at the Music City Bowl. Sampled the city's wonderful assortment of food and musical fun, and then the Tennessee Volunteers delivered big-time in the game -- downing Nebraska 38-24. It was their third straight bowl win over a Big Ten team -- nice bragging point. They were as sharp as I'd seen them all year, and it made me feel young to join in the "Rocky Top" cheering and fist-bumping with my Vol brothers and sisters. Happiest sports day in my life, next to my son being the winning pitcher in a conference championship game in college baseball. (Well, okay, some of my grandkids sports accomplishments rank higher too -- I should say my happiest moment rooting for any of my favorite teams not fielding any of my family members)....

As for getting back on the fitness course, I've got work to do! I've got double dawgs for two weeks (big ol' Dasher as well as Ellie) so that's a start. They both love to be walked. The big challenge will be returning to sensible eating and getting back on the scales to track progress.

Will love to hear how y'all have been doing!

Cheers,

Superbob

Happy New Year Superbob, and everyone else, from over the other side of the pond !

We had a quiet new Year's Eve here, apart from the noise of fireworks lol I think dh will be trying to get back on track with the scales now he's finished most of the Christmas mince pies, panetonne, biscuits and chocolate ! I got some delicious low glycaemic dark chocolate for Christmas sent from a relative in Holland which I really enjoyed. But I mostly loved the turkey, got four very good meals out of ours, and I love brussels sprouts - just had some with a rib-eye steak and a nice glass of red wine :)

Dh and I gave ourselves a DVD set of Mister Ed for Christmas which we're working our way through. I used to watch Mister Ed as a child, seeing it now I get the adult humour which is in it...so funny and so very clever !

Happy New Year to all! Matters not which side of the pond.

Quiet New Year's for us also as weather has ruined both weekends as far as having family. Just as well as I still cannot stand and cook for hours for everyone (yet).

We went to local bar here and each had a beer and order a burger and chicken strips to take home for supper. Were home before 5 as I call this holiday amateur night (everyone that doesn't drink all year comes out and gets crazy!)

Superbob yours sounded like a great time and glad "yawl" are back to start this thread. I can just imagine what a thrill it was as I have been to a professional baseball game and absolutely loved it!

Paleowoman your holiday was a good one also. Loved Mr. Ed also and bet it is a good watch. Now about those dark chocolates......and from Holland even! Yummm!

Well now it is time for all of us "weight challenged" to get on board! So cold and snow over the knees here, pcp still says no exercise, so now I am adding reps to range of motion exercises, marching in place, and stretches. I could go for a little cardio.

That's it for me but still doing my best to .......stay the course.

Hope everyone has a glood 2017.

I fell off the "healthy-eating" wagon over the holidays and now I carry around an extra 5 pounds as a reminder of my weak will power. ☹️

I now have a goal to spend enough time on the treadmill to listen to the full soundtrack of the musical 'Hamilton'

"I am not giving up my shot!"

I'm not giving up my shot, either -- in fact, I think I'll have a double. . . oh, wrong meaning. Sorry.

We had a very quiet New Year's Eve at home. Just my DW and me this year, for the entire weekend. We actually enjoyed it. On Friday we did get to have High Tea at Chicago's Langham Hotel, across the street from Trump Towers. A most delightfully decorated room, seasonal music played by a harpist, wonderful sweets and savories, as well as some great tea and sparkling wines. My wife and I spent almost 3 hours there at a very quiet table. We had one of our best one-to-one conversations in a long time. On Saturday we went downtown again, this time for an early New Year's Eve dinner at Mario Batali's Eatily store/restaurant. Great Italian foods, crazy busy/hectic store all around the restaurant areas. Sunday and Monday were more quiet days at home, with minor excursions to local restaurants - as long as there were just the two of us, we didn't cook over the holiday.

Today, Cinderella, I'm back at work. Regular workload, but a shortened week in which to do it. So, we pay in advance, take time off, and then pay again. So goes the life of the working folks. At least we played at being part of the leisure class over the long holiday weekend. Hope everyone has a safe, healthy and happy new year.

To supplement my double-dawg walking, I signed up for a twice-a-week fitness class by a personal trainer at the rec center just two blocks from my home.

I feel slimmer already.

Or anyway slightly less obese.

Hey, S-B. . .

Those sessions with the trainer sound like a really good idea. Not only will it be good, focused activity, but it may also give you other ideas of how to supplement your regular activities to make even more improvements.

I know what you mean about feeling better already. It feels good to be doing something toward your goals. Right now, I've back-slid a bit. I picked up 3 or 4 pounds between the holidays and some added meds for another issue. I'm crushed, feel like a big slug. I have to find a way to get those pounds off. At least my mind is conditioned. Now if I can get the body to follow. . .

Now if you run out of space for those snowflakes, just put them into an envelope, put two stamps on it, and send it up here. We can just add them to the snow we still have from last month. With temps for the next few days in the single-digits, the rest of the snow will be here until June or so.

Well I have not stayed the course, but I'm hopeful I will find my way back. Hubby too. He recognized something was wrong with his heart rhythm a few weeks ago, and an EKG confirmed Afib. He went through a nuclear stress test and ECHO on Tuesday, and we're waiting on results. The cardiologist has already mentioned shedding some weight, so I guess that has become our mutual New Year's resolution.

Duffey, glad to see you back here, but sorry to hear about your hubby's Afib. Hope the results of the latest tests are good. Last year, my cardiologist had some concern about left atrium size for me, and suggested it could cause Afib. That concern eased after a C-Scan, but she's still after me about weight. Had been impressed with all the weight i dropped in months after I adopted Ellie, but got after me for then putting some of it back on. I am blaming the dog. lol

I am a record high in terms of weight! And me body is feeling it with a nasty cholesterol report of 302 total with a 209 LDL. Doc is putting me on Lipitor and come back in 6 weeks for recheck, instructed to redouble healthy eating and exercise. Anybody had success lowering cholesterol thru diet? Looks like low sugar & flour, high fiber, and replacing animal fat with fish and vegetable fats are the keys, along with not being so darn fat.

dornole, you probably have all this information, but this Mayo Clinic gives some ideas. Not suggesting a cause-and-effect, but I eat oatmeal almost every day and my cholesterol numbers are great. (Also eat a lot of seafood and fruit and nuts.) Take just a very small dose of simvastatin for good measure but my doctor has suggested I may not need it. On weight loss, I am no paragon of virtue -- today we had the grandkids over and we had desserts and I indulged -- got to avoid nibbling now that the leftovers are around.
