I hope you have a smooth surgery and a quick recovery, Jay.

I guess you know the drill, so I won't bore you with it. Just know that we'll be thinking of you, and waiting for you here when you get back.

Best wishes,

Hi, and welcome to this forum. I have a St. Jude mechanical mitral valve and have none other than the normal concerns about having a heart that needed fixing in the first place.

I have the standard model. There are newer updated versions but my surgeon said this model had proven it's reliability over the years and he saw no reason not to use it.

Best of luck with your surgery this week. I will put you on my prayer list and remember you in prayer....especially on the 23rd!

Hi,
i have a st jude mv, ticking away for 4 months now. My surg said its the best.
You sound confident going to your second ohr. Good luck.

All the best for your surgery tommorrow. will be thinking of you.

I have not any prolems either with my St. Jude's valve, received in 2001. I just have to remember to take the warafin and watch the green veggies. I do walk everyday. And have lost weight. So no real problems with the St. Jude's valve. It has made things easier.

Hi:
I have had a St Jude valve (mitral) since 1984. It is running fine still. My doctor thinks it might be eternal. So I think you have a good one. I a glad you are home and doing well.
I am curious if there are others who have had the same valve for so long. If so let me know. Cherie

coumadin tx after 20 years

coumadin tx after 20 years

Hi: bvdr;
I do home test now and that has made it so much easier. I test it once a week for QAS and more often if I know my diet has changed. The first few weeks I tested about 4 times. I am pretty good at adjusting my own coumadin, after 20 years I should be, I have more experience than most of the pros I see. I love salads and broccoli. So I eat it and adjust my dose accordingly. your doctor should be involved with this. Mine is.
I think it is a big mistake to stop eating dark leafy greens because of the vitamin K. They are so healthy and help with weight, and diabetic control (both of which I deal with). I would encourage anyone who gave them up to talk to your doc about putting them back in your diet, especially if you home test and can check on any particular day. Your doc can help you figure out how to regulate the coumadin according to the diet.
Sorry for the lecture, I just have heard so many heart patients say they don't eat them. I hope you are doing well.
Today is my first time in this website. I just heard about it today. I am really happy to talk to other folks with "valves". cherie

I've gone a year with 2 St Jude valves - they had quit using the ones that had that special surface by the time I got mine - I wasn't aware there is an old type v. new type issue.
I'll pray your surgery goes well.
