I had AVR on May 8, 2009 and I am highly concerned as I am now starting to feel sick again as I did prior to my surgery. I had a fever of 102 and went to my local hospital. They took blood and urine but were unable to find anything wrong with me. The Dr stated that my white blood cell count was normal so I should not have any infection, this is what I was told before and they were wrong. I have a call into my heart Dr however I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this???

thank you!

KWR, I think you did the right thing to call your Cardio. I would call them again if there is no response soon. If you have not done so, you might also call your PCP just in case your Cardio is slow in responding. Your PCP will probably want to order his or her own cultures and not just take a quick look. Considering the upcoming holiday it would be best to get them moving today. Stay on top of it.

Having a fever is always a concern because of acute endocarditis of your tissue valve. Make sure you get this checked specifically - although (I'm no expert) your tests so far look ok. A run of antibiotics would do no harm as a precaution. If you have physical symptoms concerning your valve (shortness of breath etc) then you should get these checked ASAP although I would at the least insist on a check for infective endocarditis so that you can rest easy!

Hope it all work out

KW,
Maybe someone else can answer whether there are specific tests for endocarditis. I agree with the others, you should find out what is causing this. When the hospital did their urine and blood tests did they specifically test you for endocarditis? If you don't know, then maybe you could call them and find out.

I think that consulting with your cardiologist and your surgeon is a wise thing to do, and do it sooner rather than later. I assume that your surgery was in a larger town (I've been to S. Boston:)). Maybe you can email or call the surgeon's office and the cardiologist that attended you at the surgical hospital and get their opinion. That is their job.

Did anyone consider that it might be flu?

Best of luck my friend,
John

This might be different than the others advice, and I don't know what your doctors have told you to do and when to call them, but what we have always done for Justin, after the first couple months post op, is to call his ped/GP for high temps and when he seems sick (Justin also has a history of BE, so I understand the fear of getting it again) and THEN if the blood cultures grew postive then we would call the cardiologist. I also usually don't take him to the ER for fevers, unless he is really sick, because his docs and me think ER waiting rooms are full of sick poeple with germs, so if possible we try to go to his doctor and avoid the ER. For a fever, we try to bring it down with tylenol ect if he gets it in the middle of the night, which he usually does.
Do you know what blood tests the ER ran? I am hoping if you were concerned about BE they drew blood cultures, since that is the test that would show if you have bacteria in your blood. What other sysptons are you having? There is alot going on this time of year, HOPEFLLY it is not BE
Now IF there is something I am pretty sure is heart/surgery related, like he had that weird thing on his incision a couple weeks ago, (he also has a history of a sternal infection) I WILL call his card or surgeon, because I know his ped will just tell us to have cardiology check him. One time I was almost positive he had BE, he had all the symptons, fever ect he did when he had BE, I was so surprised when the blood work showed Mono. (editted to add we did go to the ped and he orderred all htte blod work, including BE and Mono)
I hope your docs call you back soon and you start feeling better and can enjoy the holidays.

Hopefully, its just the flu or a virus that passes in 24 hours or so. I know how it feels to get scared everytime there is a pain or fever.

Best wishes

They did a flu test and that was negative, the blood test was a CBC to see if I had any infections and they said that was negative. I am concerned as I know I simply do not feel right and there is no explination for the fevers if something is not wrong. THey did not do a colture. My surgery was at MCV, I am still waiting to hear from them. It's about 2 hours from here and I hate to drive all the way up there and nothing be wrong but I hate to sit here and find out later that I needed to be there.....confused!

They are all MCV Dr's so it's a little over 2 hour drive for me. I have called and they said it could take as much as 3 days for someone to get back to me? I'm not sure if I am over reacting or if I should just drive up there? Still feeling bad and fever is still coming and going. It seems when the fever breaks I just sweat it out, I don't know what's wrong I just know something is not right.

At the very least, I would be at my PCP's office getting them on board to figure out what is going on. I would also put a call into my cardio just to make sure they are aware and looking into things. Don't let them brush this off. As you know, this time of year it can be hard to get in touch with people, so I would call everyday, several times a day until you get answers.

By the way, have you looked into Endocarditis to see if you have any other symptoms?

I hope you get an answer soon.

Kim
