Howdy folks,

Thanks to all of you who were praying for me during my surgery and a special thanks to Bob Allen for posting my progress.

By all accounts I came through with flying colors. The biggest problems I had was from medications afterwards. The percoset made me nausous and I got a bad case of rash that I suspect came from the lovenox injections.
I made it back home on Sunday and have been "impatiently patient" about my progress. In other words, I want to feel better than I do, but realized I'm probably where I'm suppose to be. :D

I've been trying to keep up with my walking, but can only go outside early in the morning and late in the evening because of the heat. My appititie is finally coming back but I still get a bad aftertaste in my mouth after drinking anything sweet. Hoping this will soon disapear along with my rash.
Otherwise, I'm trying to concentrate on "kicking a little higher" each day.;)

Welcome home Barry! It can be a bit more slow-going that we'd like, but continue to go by what your body tells you it can do. A year from now you'll be wondering how the time flew so quickly.

That is Great news!!
Take some time to enjoy nature, peace and quiet, don't push too hard.
When a crappy day happens, a better one is around the corner.
And your sense of taste takes a few weeks to be "normal" again.:)

Glad to hear you made it :) . It's all uphill now. Bad tastes take awhile to leave. The walking should progress fairly rapidly. I'll be three weeks post-op on the 29th and I'm walking 4-6 miles per day in hilly terrain over two walks per day. 3 weeks ago I was doing three half mile walks per day on flat terrain. You'll be amazed at how rapidly you progress. At 4 weeks, next week, I'm planning to return to work.

This side of the mountain is a wonderful place to be!

You will be amazed at your progress. Just take it slow.

After 6 weeks, I went back to the gym and started doing some lower body weights and even some curls. It's now in my 7th week and I've been sort of jogging a bit when I walk--it's slow and ugly, but, hey, it's jogging!

Congrats.

Barry, congratulations on getting home safe and sound. Patience is the key word for the next few weeks. I had my MVR at Duke August 25, 2003 and had the same problem with the heat outside. We live in Pinehurst and there is no such thing here as a shopping mall so My husband and I would go to Walmart and walk. It was actually pretty nice. I saw a lot of people I knew and the air conditioning was perfect. We picked up whatever we were in need of while we were there. You might have somewhere similar to go walk near you. The weatherman said today that out of 28 days this month we have already had 27 days of 90 degrees or greater and to expect the same for the rest of the month as well.

Glad you are home and doing so well, Barry. Every day will be an improvement. Betty's suggestion to walk the mall or a large air-conditioned box store is a good one.

Welcome home. Glad to hear it's going well. You'll learn to be patient. I found my mind was willing but the body wanted to go at it's own pace. Best to listen to it, as it tends to rebel if you don't. All the best for a continued smooth recovery.

It's only been 2 weeks Soilman. Take it easy and let your body respond to the serious stress that it had to endure. Glad to hear you are doing well now, with no complications. You will slowly improve, and soon you will be up and stomping on that soil!

It was nice to read your cheerful post, Barry. I remember thinking that all the hospital food tasted exactly like the sheets smelled and I even wondered if everything was washed in the same icky bland soap. But it was those strangely temporarily- and chemically-altered internal tastebuds:eek:. It will get better though, as others have mentioned. Keep kicking higher each day:).

Glad to hear you're over the mountain and still hiking! Remember, slow and steady wins the race! Happy trails!

Welcome Home ...

Welcome Home ...

Glad to hear that you're doing OK, Barry. Glad I checked this thread before heading in on Friday as I hadn't heard about the taste buds thing

Oh well, I guess I could hold my nose, unless they have tubes shoved up there

Take it easy like they all say ... I know I'm going to even though it will be hard to do ;)

Well, err, actually they do have tubes shoved up the nose for the oxygen!! That also has a funny smell.

Barry,

WELCOME HOME! Glad you are home and posting again :).

Thoughts/prayers coming your way for a continued SUCCESSFUL recovery!

Way to go Barry! Don't push it....it will all come back in time. I forgot about the taste thing. If we could bottle that I could sell to the "losers" on the diet thread:D :D

Glad you are over the hill brother.

Thanks everybody. Still feeling prettly good. I walked a total of about 2 miles yesterday, although the midday walk was on a tredmill due to the heat. I also slept in the bed for the first time since before surgery.

Great idea Cooker! I lost 10 lbs. without even trying! It might not be the most popular diet plan around, but I guarntee It'll work!

Welcome Back

Welcome Back

Welcome back!

The taste thing affected me for a couple of months.

Keep after the exercise thing, but make sure to listen to your body when it tells you that you've on the verge of overdoing.

Hi Barry, just wanted to say congrats on your successful surgery and wishing you a speedy recovery! Sounds like you are doing great. I am 9 days post-op so right behind ya.. (although sounds like you might be hard to keep up with :) Know what you mean about the heat, I'm in Georgia and I have to go outside early or later in the day.
