insomnia and weightloss

insomnia and weightloss

Linda,
I too found I did not sleep too well after my avr last November. Initially, it was the pain and also being very aware of my heart beat and the clicking of the valve. I found sleeping with the radio on on the headphones helped drown it out. Then later, I think the painkillers themselves made sleep difficult. I was taking what is known as Tramadol in the UK (don't know if you use it in the US), and one of it's side effects was insomnia.

I lost about 10 pounds in 7 days after surgery because food just disgusted me. Unfortunately (in my case), the weight all came back, and more. I am now in a panic to lose some before my cardiology outpatiemt appointment in October.

Hope your husband continues to make good progress. We are all here to offer you support and advice.

Ross, my first spirometer is sittin over yonder in the bookcase wall. Now they gave me another one in May when I had pneumonia with that surgery (2 illnesses for 1?) and it's sittin on the table by 'my' chair and I check from time to time to see if I am still breathing. Maybe I just better toss 'em both, huh? How bout the inhaler that I don't use/need anymore. Better toss it, too. I am a pack rat and have everything I ever acquired (well, almost). teehee

Certainly get rid of those spirometers and it probably wouldn t hurt to pitch the inhaler too. I'd check the expiration date of the inhaler before it goes to file 13 just to make sure.

My spirometer is on the shelf above my computer as a reminder:D
I thank God I did not throw out my inhalers last week like I started to. I had a D__M asthma attack at work today thanks to all the perfume/cologne being worn in a room about 20X30.

I am so frustrated about this its both in the hand book and posted no perfumes/colognes. What can I do to get the higher ups to make sure it is enforced?

Sorry I got off thread subject.

Can I add a few of Joe's incentive spirometers so Johnny can run over them?

I guess I'm half normal: I turned into a nocturnal Owl for the first couple of months and those daytime naps felt sooooo good. But ------ How the devil do you guys manage to lose weight after surgery ??? Still Chubby

I too had sleeping problems but I for some reason cant sleep well on painkillers. I can take two vicodan and still be wired not to mention ready to clean the whole house.

Everyone handles things differently I guess. I took Ambien and I didnt like it much. I always felt grogy the next day. I am 5 months post-op and still have troubles sleeping sometimes, but it goes in spurts. I can sleep great for a couple weeks and then I cant.

I am pretty sure I might be the only person who gained a ton after surgery :)

I was really looking forward to shedding a few pounds but gained 30 over the last 6 months :(

My insurance wont pay for rehab. They say I am too young to need it, but I live in Phoenix Az and its too darn hot to get out walking much. I know I could walk at the mall... But I would just bring my credit cards and get into trouble ;)

Good luck and good health to your husband :)

Hear ya kiddo. Though, I remained the same weight until starting the beta blocker 3 years post op. Yep, 30lbs for me too! Luckily I have a large frame and can hide it pretty well. My doc would like me to drop just 10 of it. I was a bit of a toothpick prior to. Could it be your medication Andrea?

Not sure if its the meds, but they all just got changed because I was in CCU recently stuck in atril fib.

Maybe I can lose some of it now

HI Andrea , I couldt believe how bloated and how much weight I gained after surgery, like 20 pounnds!!! Bloated and insomia for about 6 months bad combo! hfk

weight gain

weight gain

I thought I was supposed to lose weight after the surgery but I gained instead. I quit smoking so this didn't help at all. It is a bad combination of weight gain and insomnia. I am 6 mos. postop and still have some problems with sleeping but not on a regular basis. I think some of it is medication related. I gained 13 lbs. and the Dr. said that he would rather me gain a little weight than smoke. Nothing fits right. My whole body seems to have changed. I don't like what I am seeing. Oh well, I feel better and that counts for a whole lot. I plan to get really serious about losing this when the weather gets cooler and can go the gym everyday.

Linda:

My ears [or should I say eyes] perked up when I red that Larry had surgery at the Mayo. That is where my cardiologist is and that is where I will be having surgery. Was it a Dr. Dearani [not sure I spelled it right].

Mine will be the tricuspid valve, not mitral, but was just curious how things went there.

Take care.
