My MV repair if fast approaching on the 20th and last week I started getting what I though was a cold virus. I went to the Dr. yesterday, and she says it is seasonal allergies. Gave me a few meds, no antibiotic though. My cough was terrible last night. Things seem to be calming down today. I find that whenever I get sick even with a cold I feel so exhausted and tired. I guess that cah be because of the mitral regurgitation. Any one else experince this? I am praying that I fell better before the weekend. I have waited so long for this surg. I hate to have to postpone it. My cardiologist is aware of the situation.

You've still got a few days to start feeling better, so hopefully, you will. Try not to fret; whatever happens is almost always for the best.

10 days before surgery, I developed a bacterial infection from a scratch my new kitten gave me. It was all I could think of that the infection would delay things. As it turned out, it did not. If your problem is seasonal allergies, your Doctor should be able to help you get through until next week. You could also touch base with your surgeon's office to see if there is anything else they might recommend.

my op is on the 22nd for mitral valve repair all being well. i to have had runny nose, itchy eyes and slight sore throat in the mornings for the last 3-4 weeks basically mild cold symtoms!. i mentioned at my pre op meeting this time of year i seem to have a permanent cold ,they said a normal cold would not stop surgery, but i would still come in as normal and they would check i was ok for surgery. i am hoping this gets better in the next few days not thats its bad just would like to be as fit as possible going into this.
what meds did your doctor give you ? i find lemsip cold remedyand certrizine hay fever tablets helped but dont want to use anything now this close to surgery .but could do with something for the itchy eyes runny nose classic hayfever symptoms!

wishing that symptoms subside. sounds mighty like allergy to me. I am sure your doctors are keeping this in mind. just remind them. Blessins............

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well before your surgery.
Be very careful about using any product that has aspirin in it. My surgeon required I stop all aspirin pre surgery for two weeks and his office gave me a list of all the products containing aspirin. The list is very lengthy so you could be taking it in one or another cold/allergy medication and not even know it.

I had slight sore throat for several days pre surgery and it got me very anxious that would delay my surgery but thankfully my throat was better by the time I went to MGH.

Best wishes.

I hope you're feeling better--or at least haven't developed a cold. It seems this time of year a lot of us have to worry about having surgery postponed by a cold or flu. I know you want to get it over with now you're wound up for it, but you really don't want to have the surgery when you're already fighting a respiratory infection!

Best wishes,
Debby

Don't want to scare you, but you CAN NOT go into surgery with a slight cold, phlem or something on the chest! Boost yourself with Vitamin C and get enough rest and fluids but DO NOT go into surgery when you still have a virus or cold or something.

I had to postpone my surgery for a month because of a cold/bug/virus. You don't want to head into a surgery with any kind of respiratory infection. Do check with your surgeon on this and let him/her know what's going on.

All best to you....

THanks everyone! I did get an antibiotic yesterday. I was miserable from coughing. Today I overall feel better. Cough is better, still some and some phelm, but improving!
I did call the surgeon yesterday, and they did want be to start an antibiotic and be well for surg. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed and praying that each day is an improvement. To Dean89- My PCP treated me as if it was allergies, Zrytec, steriod inhaler( which I have stopped). Allergies or cold, I think Mucinex and something for cough and tylenol are helping me the most. I am just ready to get to the other side of the mountain!!!!
