...hiding a wide grin...

Ummm.... Try $400,000 and climbing here... We don't have an exact total yet, the hospital and my insurance are still haggling, but I'm fondly refered to as "My half a million dollar man" by my wife now.

Granted I had an extremely rough experience which included several surgeries to take care of bleeding issues and other problems after the big one.

As for the list, I'd like to back up a few points, especially #3 and #9.

I was DRIVEN to get out of that bed. Every chance I got (and a few that I stole on my own and paid for, whoops!) I got out of bed. One night it was 3am and I couldn't sleep so I asked to go for a walk down the hall on the floor. I spent some time sitting at the nurses station reading one of my books and listening to the radio with the other nurses. The other nice thing was a big tropical fish tank at the end of the hall with a 2-seat couch across from it. I sat there a lot and drew in my sketchpad or just watched the fish. Even got to see a woman come and feed the fish a few times, raw meat, not the little processed fish flakes. Get up and get out of bed. The more you do that the better of you'll be. Laying in bed all the time just makes it harder to get up when it's time to go home, if you get to that point.... I always had folks helping me out and they knew how important it was for me to get up and move around. I got to shave a few times in a bathroom (brought an electric razor, they wouldn't have allowed it if I had a straight razor becaue of the coumadin) and even a few showers. Oh yeah, and getting out of bed keeps the bed sores away. I had a pair of those from being stuck on my back for 4 weeks while I was on the vent.

Hey Harpoon, that's what the insurance companies being billed, but that isn't even close to what they'll actually pay. Maybe a 1/3 of that, but no more. Gotta love the medical billing. Inflate the price 500% so you can still make 100%.

Hm-m-m--

Just wondering the medical "value" of Ross and Joe. And there are also a few other BIG time medical spenders here.

By the way, welcome to the site Harpoon. It's a really great place. Nice to have you here.

That was a great list!

I am also loved by my insurance company. Cost of surgery was around 90,000. That's with no complications and release on day 3. Just think of the cost if they added us all together!

Oh really????

My father was getting mail listing the $400,000+ price tag for services rendered. Didn't know there might be an alternate figure involved...

Speaking of bills, I just got a statement for the hernia surgery I had in May, before the valve replacement. I had developed a hernia, probably from the excessive coughing. That was around $9,000 but my final amount owed was $75.00. Not bad.

Here's an idea. . .

Here's an idea. . .

Kenny - I just tripped over your list, and everyone is right -- you have pulled together the kernel of hundreds of posts on the pre-surgery board. I personally find it a huge help to have it all together. Thank you.

Cort, I'm not sure how we want to publish Kenny's list for the newcomers. A poster in the waiting room is a must, but I don't think it will show well on my office wall (don't want to give the sharks the idea there may be blood in the water any time soon. . . ) -- so why don't we look into maybe having some wallet cards printed, maybe on the back of the vr.com business card?

Ross - any ideas here?

Kenny,

Thank you so much for posting your short course. It is so informative for us newbies and your sense of humor is much appreciated.

best,

suz

List

List

Thanks, Kenny for your list.
I am a new member, just signed on. I am in the "waiting room" as someone put it. My valve replacement surgery is scheduled for Jan. so your list willo be a big help.

Thanks Kenny

I too am in the 'waiting room' for RP sometime in the next few weeks.

I'm in the public hospital system here in Melbourne Australia, so the surgery won't cost me, though the downside is that I have to wait for operating space and surgeon availability...

My brother had RP six years a go in the private system and without insurance I think would have cost $60,000

Grant

Kenny's Awesome List

Kenny's Awesome List

Kenny,

I am a newbie to this board, found it not even an hour ago. I found out on Friday that I need mitral valve replacement surgery. I will probably go in at the end of this month or early Feb. Just have to pick which kind of valve to get first.

While I'm at a loss for what kind a valve I'm going to choose, I do know this, I am going to print your list out and refer to it constantly before I go in for surgery. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Ken I couldn't harly agree with you more!! I don't belive in a god as such, and I don't have any problems with facing heart surgery. But we do agree to welcome any prayer and cantations of any kind .
