removal of all teeth????

did it wed. just kept telling myself to put one foot in front of the other. having done the ohs before, i knew upon starting the general anasthesia, that i would either wake up almost toothless, or not. well, woke up. pain not too bad. good drugs, darvon, complete with that nodding out while watching tv thing, and then you are still watching the tv, but your eyes are closed. but the dentures!!!! they have gotten more and more painful. i wore them all day at work today (well only had 5 people, so half day), and took them off to rest. when i tried to put them back in -- OW!!!! at this point i am almost looking forward to the aorta replacement as i know i wont have to wear those dentures for at least a few days!!! if anyone knows anything about dentures, or a good dentures forum where i could pick some brains, i'd appreciate it. thanks as always -- joe

What seems strange to me is that they have you wearing dentures already when you just had your teeth pulled a few days ago.

I had 1 tooth pulled a few weeks ago and the site was sore to the touch for a good couple of weeks. I could not imagine having something pressing against the area constantly.

Perhaps time will help but this sounds painful. I would be a frequent visitor at the dentist until you are satisfied with the answers and more comfortable.

My dad had all his teeth removed over 50 years ago now. He had heart troubles too, hmmm. Anyway, he wore dentures the entire time I was growing up. Never had any trouble with fit, or looseness of the dentures, never needed any creams, etc. He swore it was because he was able to get his dentures quickly (not always the case back then) and wear them right away. He said his gums "healed into the shape of the dentures" giving him a great fit. Is this just a story or is there truth to it I don't know. Is it still the case with today's technology? Just a thought.

I'm not surprised on the pain with the dentures - espcially after you took them out. While in place, they would limit the swelling. Upon removal, your gums would swell unrestricted and they you try and put them back in - ouch.

My sister recently had 24 teeth pulled. The dentist put temporary dentures in immediately and she wore them until the permanent set was ready- no problems. As I remember, she had to go back the next day and a few other times to have them checked and adjustments made.

I personally would talk to both my cardio and surgeon before decidingto follow my dentists adviceIt could be that a dose of very strong antibiotics prior to heart surgery woul be all that is needed and you can have peridontal surgery later. Your dentist may just be trying to be cautious so you won't have to be off coumadin later if a full mouth extraction is needed after your heart surgery.

I faced a similar situation before my OHS. I had to have all my teeth pulled on a Friday (heavy antibiotic) and had my OHS on Monday. If I had had the luxury of time I would have been fitted with the temporary dentures but it didn't work out that way. So, some 2 weeks after my OHS I went to the denture place. Yes, it was painful for a bit - I used a bunch of Benzodent- anesthetic cream - that helped a lot. And I did a lot of gum massage when I had them out. You might find that using Fixodent powder might help - it creates more of a cushion - as your swelling goes down but before you're ready for the final denture.

Two thoughts:

A better fit might be in order. Maybe this isn't your dentist's strong point.

Longer term: titanium implants. Talk to your periodontist. It's like having your own teeth again.
