TIM W.

My in-laws in Florida have AOL internet. I have a local provider. They have trouble receiving pictures we send to them. The mail we send arrives, but not the pictures. In fact, most of our relatives who have AOL have the same trouble. Once in a great while, one of them might recieve the pics, but usually not.
Do any of the AOL users on board here have any advice? Something I can do differently or something the AOL users can do?
As always, thanks for the help! Tim
(We send in jpeg format)

Tim right now AOL is having major problems (Which they will not acknowledge) with the Bug Bear worm. It's affecting email traffic big time for them. Was this always a problem or something that seems even worse over the past few days?

Perhaps Nancy can make a suggestion here.

Hi TIM-

I don't know for sure what the problem is, but I have AOL and sometimes pics are sent in a Zip format and as an attachment. They may not automatically open. Unless the receiver has an unzipping program, the pics will not open up. Also there are several settings within AOL re: mail and pics and attachments. Your receivers should take a look at what their mail controls are. They may have set the security setting too high to be able to look at attachments, and they might have parental controls active.

Sometimes the pictures are sent to the Download Manager and will only open up when specifically told to by the receiver.

When I receive pics, the timer bar will ask if I want to open them up right away, and it will do so. But if I opt not to look at them then I will have to find them on the computer to view later. They are normally sent to the Download Manager in that case. However, if the receiver doesn't pay attention to where the pics are sent, they may be sent to another location of the computer.

If the pics are in a format that AOL doesn't use, they may be stored on the computer. The receiver can then use a program like Infraview to convert them to an AOL compatible format.

Sorry to be so iffy and lengthy. But there are loads of variables.

Infraview is a wonderful little program to have. It helps to open up lots of various formats. Once you find the unopened file, you can send it right to Infraview.

Maybe someone else can clarify what I've said.;)

Hi Ross-

I guess our posts just missed each other. Very funny about the Bug Bear worm, it isn't affecting any of the raunchy spam that comes in every day. That stuff is impervious to EVERYTHING!:D

I don't want to enlarge, deflate, remortgage, clean my septic system, look at people engaged in various activities, or get free prescriptions. Spammers--go away!:p

[mount soapbox]

The most 'successful' spamming organizations often employ expert-level developers and network engineers. Throw up a roadblock to their traffic, and soon they will circumvent it.

A difficult problem to solve - defies legislation due to the blurred international boundaries. I suspect that the only way it will ever get solved is to remove the economic payoff - prove to them it doesn't make money. Unfortunately, today, it does.

They have cut off my ISP altogether - saying my ISP allows spam - it does not. They have finally acknowledged my ISP and that it's ok, but said they will get around to re-connecting us when they can get around to it!!!! Maybe a few days. Anything I send that has to use AOL lines is returned to me by 'postmaster'.

I was an AOL user for years. Recently AOL (without permission) mind you edited my pricing plan. Received my credit card bill. Almost $1000. I was set up with the BYOS option. "Bring your own service" since I have a DSL connection. To make a long story short..... it was hell getting a credit. Managed to do so with the help of a few friends. Then we dropped them. As for the photos. Anyone I know with AOL cannot open my photo files.

I have AOL. When I send internet pictures, I left click on the pictures, and 'properties' comes up. I then change that to 'internet explorer' or 'msn photo editor' then I send the pictures. If the reciepient has AOL it will send just fine, otherwise I change the properties. If it is a personal picture I have downloaded from my camera, I change the properties to 'msn photo editor' if it is a internet picture I change the properties to 'internet explorer' and that usually works just fine. If they don't have an un-zip format, just send the pictures individually. That is what I do with my folks. I hope that helps.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I'll pass it on to my in-laws.

Rossman, the problem has been going on for over a year now.

Thanks again! Tim

Hi TIM-

I had a couple of mnutes to look at what AOL has to say about viewing pictures and e-mail. You will have to send them, I believe, in an e-mail attachment file. I don't think they can read pics that you have embedded in the body of your e-mail,, unless you are both on AOL.

Ask your friends and relatives to do this: (I have AOL 8, so it might be slightly different):

Go to Keyword-Mail

Look for-Mail Help

Look for E-Mail (sending E-Mail, reading E-Mail)

Look for article-"How do I save and view pictures from mail?" this will take you to the article entitled: "To download and view pictures".

AOL................

AOL................

I have broadband but my sister has dial up AOL and as far as I know she doesn't have a problem opening up anything I send her. I use Mircrosoft Outlook to send out all my mail. (not sure if that is somehow related).

About SPAM--when I am at one of my accounts on Mondays they use Verizon DSL and I get spam all day! I will be in my accounting software and I get messages across my screen all day long! They are either porn, or messages on how to get rid of spam like the one I am looking at! It is very frustrating, as with broadband I don't get any of that! Every once in a while I get e-mail spam for prescriptions, no porn, and other misc. items. Guess I will take broadband over DSL any day!

Hi Nancy,

Thanks again for the time you took to research AOL directly. I'll pass it along to my in-laws. Tim
