Amy,
I went in to the hospital at 5 am, surgery was at 7, I was in the ICU about 2pm and out of the ICU at 2 the next day. Six days in recovery ward and I was out. Walk as soon as you can and shower as soon as you can also. Dont be afraid to ask the nurses for help when you need or even want it. It is why they are there. Take a good book and rent the TV, even if you dont watch TV. It is a good distraction.
Something I did was to take my dress shirt and pants and jacket. Also my dress shoes. I would not leave my room unless I dressed up. That was for the emotional part of my recovery. Even in the middle of the night, if I could not sleep, I would dress up to go fora walk. Often, I got the response " I did not know there was a dress code for post-op recovery". It always got a smile out of the nurses and doctors.
