Now if we are talking the orange sherbert pushups there's no telling how many I can do :tongue2:

NOW you're talking!

I did 3 push-ups a couple days ago - don't think I need to do many more for a while.....but I am headed out for ice cream (orange sherbert....YUM)

Pushups are great. I never did them before cardiac rehab. In rehab I could only do the "easy" ones. I kept doing my cardiac exercises up after rehab, with first 5, then up to 25 reps a day. Now I do 25 in the morning, 15 before lunch and 15 before dinner 5 days a week. The other day I saw this weird thing on my arm, turned out it was called a "triceps", I never noticed I had one before :)

Today's comment is "Ouch!" I'm temporarily unable to do my push-ups, as I am recovering from minor hernia surgery a couple of weeks ago. I see the surgeon again in a couple of weeks and will see what he advises then.

You do more push-ups a day then I have ever done in my life.

Perhaps, but the point is it's something I have always done and no artificial body part can keep me from it. Last Wed. I did 8 sets of 50, 400 at age 65, and that's close to my all-time record. One cannot do that unless he builds up to it very gradually. Same thing with running, I build slowly. Even though I ran a half-marathon in January, I slacked off most of the winter, so now I begin again at just 2-3 miles every other day until it feels comfortable before boosting the mileage again.

Ovie - There's no time like the present to start! Basic muscle toning exercises help to give your body "shape" rather than building up massive muscles. These exercises help the older folks to maintain shape and tone, and they help all - old and young alike, to progress toward healthy body image.

Set a new personal record this morning of 500 pushups, 10 sets of 50 done over about 2 hrs. My previous high count was 420 four years ago when I was a mere kid of 61.

Damn. Thats a crap-load of pushups. Great job!

Well, now I'm not doing them any more. It's a seasonal thing. I like to mix up the exercises. Tons of pushups all winter & spring, then very few the 2nd half of the year. I back off in June because I want to move on to other things. I'm lowering the running miles too. Next week starts the track & field season. I'll be doing shot put and running 800 meters or the mile every Tues night for 9 weeks, also swimming laps all summer. From end of August when I stop swimming and into December I pile on long distance running.

I tried to coach runners to do this with marathon training years ago too. Work up the miles for 3-4 months, do your thing and then back off to let the body recover. The trouble with runners though is once they get the marathon bug, there is no backing down until they break down.
