No real change.

No real change.

Jeff and I went up to the hospital this afternoon. We talked to Jeff's aunt and she said there has been no real change. It seems that there are three main things they are concerned about. First, they have now diagnosed his cousin as having acid reflux disease. Apparently she has had it for years and never knew it. They said that when she was knocked out from the pain meds the acid that was backing up in her throat was going down in her lungs. I guess this had been an on going problem that finally built up to a level to cause problems. The second problem is that all this has caused some kidney damage and lastly her heart has enlarged. They were planning on pulling an umbrella in her lungs to help prevent any clots or clots from moving or something. Then today she got a new doctor who ordered a head to toe catscan and said that after looking at her lungs she did have some clots but they were small ones " like everyone has" that should just pass through her. He said he didn't want to cut into her unless it was absolutly necessary so as not to put her through any more trauma. I guess that part makes sense.
They also said that her lungs are starting to clear. There is only fluid in the bottom of them instead of all the way to the top like it was earlier.
She is still in ICU and not allowed any visitors. They said she could go either way at any time. I guess all we can do is pray and wait.

I hope the medical stuff makes sense to someone as I am not sure if I explained it right or not. I don't do well in medical situations

I will keep you all updated as I get them.
Thanks so much for your prayers.

I was not aware that "everyone" has small clots in their lungs. If so, that's pretty scary!

Keeping your cousin & your family in our prayers.

I thought that was strange, too

Yes, I didn't understand it when they told us that the doctor said that everyone has small clots. I would think that any clot was bad and that the big ones start small. I would want to do whatever necessary to get rid of even small clots. I just hope the doctors know what they are doing. I may do some research on blood clots and see what I can find.

Thanks for the continued support

It is GOOD that they discovered her Acid Reflux Disease. Once that is under control, I'm sure she will be much better off.

Here's hoping her other conditions improve as well.

what was her complaint for the original testing? I am curious about it. Was it maybe for the GERD (reflux)? If she has had an ongoing situation, this might have been developing for some time. Thank heavens she was AT the hospital when she fell. Please let us know how she gets on. Blessins.......

This is the first time I have been able to view this post. I am so sorry for this young woman and her family.

It sounds to be that she might have had some kind of "event" that caused her to fall, like a small bloodclot or heart arrhythmia.

At any rate, it is a horrible thing to have happened. Life is so fragile.

God Bless.

I was also wondering the same thing.

I'm glad that they seem to be getting some of this sorted out, now lets hope that it will allow her to improve.

You still have my prayers.

The whole situation is wierd.

The whole situation is wierd.

The whole thing started when she fell at the hospital. They got her all leg taken care of and sent her home. After she was home and on the pain meds she started to get strange. She wasn't able to hold her urine, she kept wetting the bed. Her fingers and lips turned blue and her face was white as a sheet. Her husband then called an ambulance for her. They originally thought she had a heart attack. They admitted her and then it seems to snowball from there. I guess the acid reflux thing has been going on for years they think and just building up. This was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak.

Hopefully I will get an update on her this morning.

Thanks for all your prayers.

Michelle,

Those symptoms sure sound neurological to the amateur medical person. Tiny blood clots can cause black outs which can result in falling. They can also cause loss of bladder control, blockage in hands & other extremities (thus the blue coloration) as well as an ashen complexion.

It sounds like the blood clots in the lung may be a little more than "normal", which is something I have never heard of either.

I hope they are pursuing that path agressively. I am still praying for your family.

Gina,

If the problem is nurological what types of things should her parents be asking the doctors? Are there things they should be looking for? I don't have any experience with any of this so I don't know. I don't know if they really know what to look for or ask either. They are still pretty much is shock over the whole thing.

Thanks

Michelle

I am not sure what caused the fall. She was at the hospital with her mom. Her mom was having an MRI done. She( Angie, Jeff's cousin) went out to the parking lot and that is when she fell. No one else was with her so we dont' really have a first hand account of what exactly happened. I will let them know neurologistal possibilities. I am so glad that posted on here. I knew there would be people on here with information!

Thanks so much

Michelle

update

update

Well for the most part things have remained unchanged. They have switched her to a different ventilator. According to the nurses, this is a good sign. I am not sure what it means but that is the only real change that I know of today.

Thanks for all the continued support.

Michelle,
Don't give up hope, even if there is no change, or little change right now. A friend of mine had a sister who was in a coma and respirator for 5 weeks. She went in to the hospital with a bad case of the flu and just headed south for some unknown reason. Her body was shutting down. My friend made many trips to the hospital after getting the "This could be the end." call. Long story, short. The sister is now home after 3 months in the hospital and doing very well, all things considered. She appears to have no residual effect from her experience, other than being very grateful to be alive.

Heck take a look at me! They were so convinced I wasn't going to make it that they called my family in. They say I was in a vegetative state for 40 some days, then got a staph infection off an I.V. line spiking a 106F temp.

They can call it what they like, I was not here at all. I was someplace else tending to things that apparently needed tending too, then I came back.

You just never know.

Just never give up hoping. "No change" is good. I've also had the "Don't go home tonight" comment during one of Joe's hospitalizations. I watched the heart monitor all night long. Very, very slowly, I could see the heart and respirations start to improve. It took a long time.

I'm a firm believer that given the right medical care, and not even the most expert, the body tries very hard to heal itself. Time is your ally, "no change" at this point is good.

Hoping that soon there will be slight and then moderate improvements to report.

We talked to Angie's mom last night, she said they are trying to wean her of the vent and the meds they have her on to keep her sedated. I guess that is a good thing. However, they looked at her lungs again and see a new spot that they think may be a staph infection. I am not sure what exactly that means. I have heard of if but, like I said earlier, I am not up on medical stuff. I usually get faint when I hear talk of it. I am getting tougher though after the past year with all Jeff's stuff.

Thanks for all the continued support. It really means a lot to the whole family.
