Is a "tear in the aortic wall" the same thing as a rupture of an aortic aneurysm, or something different -- anyone know?

Sounds more like an Aortic Disection than a rupture.
Very few (<10%) survive an aortic rupture.

He was Very Fortunate to have suffered this 'tear' where there knowledgable Doctors were able to properly assess his condition and get him to a knowledgable and skilled surgeon (i.e. it's good that this didn't happen in a remote area or somewhere over the ocean).

Agreed, Al. As terrible as this is, I was thinking how fortunate he was to be just minutes from a major medical center. Suppose he had been on duty in some remote place.

He must be a tough man! I certainly hope he makes it. I can't even imagine a 20 hr surgery!
