Big prayers going out for your brother Karlynn,

I have a downs syndrome sister in law and know some of the struggles these adults have ...it isnt fair they have to go through this sort of stuff as well.

God Bless him and your family ...
I pray that he gets a quick and easy repair job.

Update

My sister and I had a conference call with our brother's doctor today. His ultrasound of last Friday showed 2 solid objects in the liver, but they are only about 1 cm in size. Both the surgeon and the radiologist said that because they are so small, there is no really good way to get a biopsy and that right now, they felt it was too much intervention. They said that they felt there was only about a 10% chance that the 2 small objects are cancer, and that they don't occur in the way they would in the liver if they had metastacized from another cancer source. He said they were most likely "incidental-omas", in otherwords, just strange occurances that would have never been seen if he hadn't had the hernia problems.

Their recommendation was to repair the hernias via laparoscopy (just like Ross!) and do another sonogram of the liver in 6 mo. We feel very relieved at the outcome of the talk with the doctor. Now we're looking for surgeons in my sister's area to do the hernia repair.

Thanks for the prayers!

Karlynn,

Karlynn,

I had not been on the board for a while, but am sorry to hear about what your brother has been going through. However, I am glad to hear that the spots on the liver are probably nothing serious.

As for the hernia repair, Wayne had bilateral hernia repair two years ago and it was a breeze for him, EXCEPT about 6-8 hours after the surgery, he had incredible (understatement) pain in his right shoulder. His face was beet red and he was hurting really bad - I called the doc on-call and he said it was gas that was put into the abdomen for the repair that was pressing on a nerve that was connected to the right shoulder. SO, I am just warning you to be prepared for such a thing. There was really nothing that could be done about the pain - the gas had to work its way out of the abdomen. You might want to ask your brother's surgeon if there is a way of preventing this from occurring.

Glad all is well - and hope the hernia surgery goes really well for your brother.

Karlynn,

Sorry your brother has to have surgery but happy to hear the relatively good news about the liver scan. Hopefully the spots are just that - unimportant spots that maybe everyone has.

I will pray that you find a good surgeon for the hernia repair and all goes very well.

Karlynn:

Did someone do an MRI of the liver in addition to the sonogram? I had a cat scan and then a sonogram that showed suspicious spots on my liver. The surgeon ordered an MRI using 2 different kinds of dye with lots of pictures. I laid there for a couple of hours before it was all over. Once the surgeon had the MRI and sonogram and cat scan all in front of him, he didn't even need a biopsy to tell me my spots were not cancer.

Just a thought.

I'm wishing you the best for these difficult times. Sincerely, Will

Karlynn,
Sending trans-Atlantic positive thoughts and prayers for your brother.

Karlynn:

Sorry to hear that your brother's had a problem.
A cousin's son is also mentally challenged (I like that term better than the MR phrase!) and has some physical problems as well. He's only 19, and already hates going to any doctor appointment, so I understand what your family is going through.
