My local doctor has me worried about under-taking a surgery when "protein" levels are low and yet things are not getting better. On a google search I have seen a mixed results of outcomes given low protein levels going into surgery. As I understand it all he looked at was protein total serum levels, I guess.

When Joe was on dialysis, getting enough protein was a terrible problem. I added whey protein to just about everything. He also drank Nepro which is a high protein low potassium supplement formulated for dialysis patients.

So I would guess that CHF could cause renal problems and so could diuretics, and that could also be a source of low protein.

I use a whey protein as well. I use 2 scoops of it in water, ice and some type of flavoring. I usually use instant coffee in it. That will give you 30 grams of protein. You can also heat it up instead and drink it as you would hot chocloate. You can not heat it over 130 because the protein breaks up and it clumps so I prefer it cold.
Like Rachel I'm not sure this helps you but I thought I would throw it out there. I use it as a breakfast drink and I am trying to add one in the afternoon as well.

Maybe you are not assimilating or digesting protein well. I would suggest adding a digestive enzyme or HCI (hydrochloric acid) with pepsin to your regimen - you take those with each high-protein meal.

Many diagnosed with high stomach acid and are on anti-GERD medications (are you?), really have low stomach acid and their food is not digested properly. As we age, we have less stomach acid instead of more.

Any "health food" store will be able to help you with the best digestive enzyme or HCI brand.

Another thing I noticed was you are supposed to eat no fat and high protein? I think good fats such as a lot of fatty fish in the way of sardines or salmon and lean red meat would be very good for you. Fats and protein go together to help with digestion.

I am no expert on any of this, but have done a lot of reading on the internet (Dr. Mercola is a great source of information). We need to be in charge of our own health because western medicine doctors push pills and don't get to the real source of our problems.

Thank you for your help, which is better whey, soy, or bean protein? Does the HCI matter? Is there a risk to consuming too much protein if you have liver issues?
