Hi all,
Well my May 11 surgery date got cancelled at the last minute because of a respiratory infection. During the weekend before, I started getting ill quickly with a cough and decided to call the on-call Dr covering for my primary. That Dr put me on Zithromax and I started getting better immediately.
By Monday morning I felt great and my cardiac cath went smoothly. I told everyone that would listen about my new condition and medication, because this happened after my pre-op testing/meeting.
I don't know why, but it never occured to me to call the surgeon's office and let him know about my infection and medication.
Well Tues May 11 comes and the wife and I are at the hospital bright and early at 5:30 am. We're greeted, led to the pro-op prep area where I change into the gown, cap and slippers provided. A man enter and shaves my complete chest area. Two nurses then enter, one to check out my arms for an IV site, the other to ask some last minute questions.
"Has anything changed between now and your pre-op testing"?
That's when I realized, they didn't know. I just assumed my new condition would be all over my chart. When I told her about the infection, she got a puzzled look on her face and called for the surgeon who had just entered the room. he said " No way" and that I'd have to wait until being off antibiotics for a week.
Now don't get me wrong, I completely agree with his decision. I just wish I thought of notifying him before getting up at 3:30 am and making the trek into Boston. Not to mention, that I was mentally "ready" to do the surgery.
My new surgery date is May 20th and as of now I am not mentally "ready" anymore. I hope that same calm feeling comes back when I need it.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. I guess I'm just frustrated and anxious. Hopefully the next try will go more smoothly!
