The chart lacks some logic in my opinion. What the heck is wrong with badminton? And auto racing is okay? I've got some nasty bruises from softball (the ball is not really soft), but its okay.

I agree that the key word is "competitive".

Pam, orienteering is hiking a course using a compass.

What about Scuba diving? Haven't heard anything about not being able to do that.

Competing with who?????

I've heard SCUBA is out, you need a physical for SCUBA certification and having a heart condition (they're very generic about what a "heart condition" is) disqualifies you from being certified, at least in NYS. I asked once.

Rodeoing could be a lot of things. Bull or bucking bronco riding, rustling cows, horses, sheep, small woodland creatures, clowns... Shaving sheep, chasing 'em down and typing 'em up. Doing the same thing to young cows or horses...

Nothing dangerous mind you, at least not for the people watching, most of 'em anyways...

Oh, I noticed that the asterick denotes sports that have an inherent danger of "body collision."

One of the sports that's listed with an asterick is cycling. Now outside of the Tour de France (Go Armstrong!) when did cycling become a full contact sport????

Just discovered this thread, and I don’t know where to start.

Tobagotwo : Valve Police.. I Like That :D

Harpoon (1) : In the post-op rehab we got a demonstration & trial of Thai-Chi and I think I might take it up, in 20-25 years from now.

Hosacktom : In my opinion badminton is possibly the most demanding of racquet sports if played competitively. They’ve marked squash as a non-body contact sport, they’ve not played with me Ha! Also has the person compiling this table ever been hit with a cricket ball, thought not!

Harpoon (2)
: Cycling may, or may not, be a contact sport but the ground is pretty hard, at least the last time I fell it was!

I think possibly it could be a case of malpractice wary physicians trying to cut their insurance premiums, not too sure as I’m on the other side of the pond.
My friends were very wary of me accompanying them on a cross-country skiing holiday until I produced a letter from my cardiologist, basically it was fine as long as my INR was stable and in therapeutic range. I had a ball, all enthusiasm and little technique. His advice post-surgery on sport was just to cut out the contact sport and I know a contact sport when I see it, I don’t need a stupid chart to tell me.

Now 4 years post-op and work shifts permitting go to the gym 3 times a week 20 min on the cross trainer pushing heart rate to 142-5 and hitting the training zone 65-80% of max H R for 18-19 minutes. After 3 minutes HR back down to approx 100. Resting H R is 53-57 bpm. (I’m 50 going on 18!)

...so as to justify medical recommendations against participation in all or certain competitive sports...
Sounds like CYA to me. Take a stance, then get everybody together to justify it. Real scientific...

Actually, many doctors don't seem to feel SCUBA is a problem if other factors are not a part of the picture. It has been specifically mentioned in a number of posts.

There tends to be a concern by doctors about anaerobic activities for valvers, but I've seen no real numbers to back it up. Certainly, it is a concern while you still have valve stenosis or regurgitation. When that is repaired by the replacement of the bad valve, and if the new valve opening is not considered stenotic, and if there are no other known heart complications, what remains to justify the uniform banning of it? Or of marathoning? Realistically, shouldn't these determinations be handled on a case-by-case basis?

One size rarely fits all.

Best wishes,

Yesterday during the marathon, the VALVE POLICE came running after me!!! They couldn't keep up though! :D

Well said!

What a great community we've got here. Hearing about the activities of all you guys and gals makes me think about my possibilities and not my limitations.

1.5 weeks 'til Ironman!

It's almost here Bill! It's about time to start pounding down the 'carbs'.
This Ironman is pretty exciting for all of us. Keep us posted.
