I have a new problem with acute back pain. Any suggestions for OTC pain killers and or muscle relaxers that will be ok with coumadin? I don?t want to call the doctor yet. He will want to do MRI, x-rays etc. and I?m not ready for that hubbub.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Cooker, acute back pain sucks--do you mean like slipped disk-type pain?

I have accumulated some OTC remedies that, to my surprise, actually have helped with back discomfort/pain, but I have to stress that I have no experience with coumadin interaction/contraindications...so PLEASE, if you find any of these interesting, check online to see if you can learn that any should not be used while on Coumadin:

If you have a decent bathtub, a long soak in comfortably hot water laced generously with Epsom salts (magnesium salts) will often help a great deal;

hyaluronic acid (I use Jarrow Formulas);

Sea mussel extract;

AnimalFlex by Universal (super concentrations of glucosamine chondroitin/MSM and more).

These all have anti-inflam properties, as does bromelain.

These are not painkillers, but once the inflammation that is usually part of back pain has been reduced, the pain becomes manageable with Tylenol or nothing at all.

Because they are not prescription drugs, they don't work immediately, like in an hour. But over time, they definitely do work!

Good luck--I hope you feel better soon.

Best, sona

OK Dude, you have gotten good advice....use it.
1) Tylenol
2) salt/hot water bath
3) herbal/holistic, acupuncture, chiro.
4) Doctor----even just for a preliminary diagnosis.
5) hold off on the mattress aerobics!

Don't let this condition worsen without being checked out......:)

1 through 4 are options.

Number 5.........might as well say stop the coumadin:D :p :D

I have back pain off and on from standing too long (started after I pulled some muscles lifting someone in a nursing home about 3 years ago, it doesnt happen very often, but there are 2 things that help LOTS a lot of the time I can go without taking anything when I #1 wear really good shoes, and #2 use a heating pad at night

hope this helps

Sorry to hear about your back injury Cooker! Hubby and I have wondered the same thing about meds and back injury. He has had lower lumbar injury
3 X prior to his AVR. The first time, he could barely walk. Apparently he has some irregularity of the lower spine and given his nature of work, it is bound to happen again. He was treated initially with a whopper of a pain killer and also Flexaril. With the recurrances, he was able to just take Flexaril (Cyclobenzaprine?) and Advil for a day or two and wear his back brace and do heat and the pain resolved. We would also really like to know what is safe to take for injuries. We got the okay for him to use Advil for his migranes, but those are rare and he only usually needs to take a couple. Back injury-nother story :rolleyes: Odd that he has not had an injury since AVR. I personally think he takes more care when lifting because it did hurt his sternum for a few months back to work, and that he just kept up that good lifting technique.

Hope you are feeling better soon,

Thanks everyone. I have been using heat, massage and Tylenol. It seems to be better. I was able to shuffle about a mile tonight. Very slow and very careful. I have also been trying to drink a lot of water and stay away from the soda's.

I know this sounds petty to those who have real problems, sorry:eek:

I had a disk operation for severe sciatica in 1984. Let me tell you, what I suffered because of my back was even worse than the heart stuff. Granted, you don't die from back problems - you just want to die!! So, no, it does not seem petty.
