So only one more day before my OHS to repair/replace my Mitral Valve. I go in at 5 am for preop and 8 am surgery. I appreciate all of the things I have learned here. I now know what to take with me to the hospital, what to expect afterwards and most importantly . . . DON'T Sneeze! ;) I am grateful for a wonderful family that supports me and I am looking forward to the other side and being able to exercise again! My daughter is going to update everyone on my progress until I am able to do it myself! See ya'll on the other side!

Funny you should mention sneezing and not coughing. You'll have to cough to get your lungs cleared after surgery. Make sure you know what your pain meds are and the schedule. The nurses will tell you. Don't....repeat DON"T try and be a martyr and deal with the pain. It's harder to regain a comfortable level than it is to maintain it. Your pillow will quickly become your best friend. It took about 2 weeks for my first sneeze and came up all of a sudden. (i.e. - no pillow) You'll make it through it.

My allergies are acting up and had a sneezing fit last night and another today. But....I'm still here.

Best of luck! Keep us informed.

Dave

Wanted to bump up this thread and see if LivinMyLife is checked-out and gotten home yet or finishing their stay at the hospital?

Sorry it has taken me so long to update you all. My daughter was supposed to update you all but didn't. The surgery was a little longer that expected, Dr. Bodenhamer repaired my mitral valve, but in consultation with my Cardiologist they decided it was not closing well enough so they went back in and placed a St. Johns mechanical valve. I spent a total of nine days in the hospital. I few issues with Atrial fibrilation so they kept me a little longer. I am still recooperating, just a little past four weeks out from surgery. I feeling much better though, still get tired at the oddest moments, but those moments are getting further apart. My incision site is closed and looks pretty good (for what it is) I have noticed the need for a new wardrobe. I can't believe how many blouses I have the reveal too much of my scar. I hated the drainage tube removal, but the rest of it was pretty much as expected thanks to all I had learned on this site. I have sneezed several times and all I can say is that I do recommend avoiding it. LOL! All in all it has not been near the bad experience that I had built up in my head beforehand and I am already feeling much better than I have in about a year now. Thanks for all the well wishes!

So glad to add another success story to our list. I'm sure being home feels wonderful. Getting tired is to be expected. There doesn't seem to be any rhym or reason to when it hits.

For now just rest, relax and recover. Don't push yourself.
