Hey! I'll be having my tube taken out of my throat for New Year's = after receiving my new aortic valve that day!!
I am thankful to find your site; discovered it through Adam Pick's book "A Patient's Guide to Heart Valve Surgery". Have known about my valve issue (bicuspid and increasingly stenotic) for years, yet am still strangely asymptomatic. But according to the numbers, it's "time"....
I've made a blog through the process thus far; you can find it at

Thanks, everyone, for all you have to share!!

*Will they go ahead with my surgery if I have a little sore throat?

Debra, I put you on the calendar and will start a thread in pre-surgery. Welcome and best wishes.

We've had such a crazy year and holiday that it will be nice to do nothing on New Year's eve. Many years ago we decided that New Year's eve would be at our home. No party, just a nice dinner and watching the ball drop.....if we make it that long. I'm really happy not going out, especially that night, so we'll be all settled in for a long winter's nap.

Hope ya'll have a wonderful holiday. May 2008 bring us all good health and much happiness.

Oh man I LOVE

Oh man I LOVE

sauerkraut! :) Your menu sounds so good, Ross! Sorry to hear that you all have been passing a bug around.

I'm glad to hear that we are not the only "boring" ones on New Year's Eve! :) We just usually stay home and watch the ball drop in NYC and order pizza. The times in my past that I have gone to others houses at New Year's, I have not liked. I am a homebody and not a party-person in the least. I'd rather ring in the New Year with "just" (lol) Wayne (and pets). :)

This year, we have a new plan: Watching the movie "Bobby", eating homemade chili and watching the festivities in New York on TV. :)

Question: Is sauerkraut and pork a New Year tradition for some? I have heard of the black-eyed pea thing, but not pork!

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!!! 2008 - wow - how did that happen??!

Yes in the North .. well at least Ohio and PA we eat Pork and Sauerkraut for good luck in the new year.
I love it!
When we lived in Louisiana I remember eating black eyed peas and fried chicken..
that was yummy too

We have our next door neighbour for a seafood dinner and then try to stay awake until midnight. This year I'm making shrimp, scallop, and crab St. Jacques. We go to their place for an Italian turkey dinner on Christmas day. This has been a tradition for years.

Well, we'll definitely eat a lot of black-eyed peas! Old Southern tradition.

Might go to an alcohol-free community celebration on New Year's Eve but usually ring in the New at midnight at home.

One thing I won't do is get sloshed -- A glass or two of champagne but nothing more. I learned from experience long ago that starting a New Year with a horrendous hangover is NOT fun. :D

On New Year's Day, I will watch the Tennessee Vols in the Outback Bowl and probably another football game or three. :)

Sauerkraut and pork is a Pennsylvania tradition. I like the sausage better than pork. Black eyed peas is a southern tradition, we never had them until we moved to Texas. We get twice the good luck by having both.

Well if pork is for good luck, maybe I should change to something else because this stuff sure ain't workin in my favor at all.

Ross, you might want to try standing in the street at midnight banging pots and pans together.
Traditionally this is supposed to ward off evil spirits....but you may end up in jail for disturbing the peace.
:p :p

Going to our friends' house that we went to last year - however, this year I will not be drinking Cosmos.
We play Pictionary - men against the women - and try not to draw any blood. The men always cheat - of course.

If we haven't killed each other off by the end of Pictionary - we move on to Trivial Pursuit.
