Hi Freddie
There is probably a thrombosis clinic (hematology department) connected to the hospital where you had your surgery. Have you tried contacting them to monitor your warfarin?

Thanks lance, I did find a phoned number and I'll try them next week and see what they say about this.

Al - my doctor is a GP and I see my Cardio in 3 weeks. Not to worry, I'll tell him about this too and Maybe (cross your fingers) he'll give the okay for a home monitor.

Oh please Tbone - lets not go there. My doc is dead against it, ooppps wrong word.
But you can check out my threads inregards of this on going saga.

Cardiologists are not much better than other pysicians in knowing how to dose coumadrin.
So very true. When I started home testing I told my cardio I would contact him for dosing. He said that was not necessary since I knew much more about my dosing that he did.

I did have a brain bleed in Nov. My INR was 6.6 when I stopped my warfarin. Then it climbed to 9.3 in 2 days. I had a bad headache the day after the 6.6 read. I don't think you would have a bleed at 3.9. My INR just kept climbing because I had a staph infection and didn't know it.

Freddie,

My INR was 7.2 the week before last. Ate a lot of greens, MVI with K and skipped a dose and it dropped quickly to 2.7.

4/26 got a major head injury at 2.7. No symptoms except localized headache. 4/30 I began showing symptoms of subdural hematoma. cat Scan neg and my INR was 3.7 at this point. Doc asked I hold a dose and diagnosed me as having a concussion for a week. My husband had to wake me up during the night etc fearing a slow brain leak.

My point is that I got through my major fear of a head injury on coumadin with a widely fluctuating INR.

I don't want to infer that a head injury on coumadin is not dangerous, but to share that my experiences with high INR and a head injury was not lethal as I had feared.

As we have noted, it doesn't matter whether your on Coumadin or not, if you whack your head hard enough, it can be life threatening even for those not on ACT.
