Yea they're still in it ... though it didn't look like it today! Ryno's in the hall now and now we have one more veteran who can vote for Ronnie Santo.

Our last game was this past Thursday ... they lost 6-0 to the D-Backs in the opener. Did manage to get Santo's autograph though, so it was a great day. The daughters got close to Barret and Ohlman, so they were happy.

Nomar, Woody and Williamson are all due back this Friday. Hopefully this will give us the boost we need for the last 2 months. The Cards are out of reach. The wildcard is the only hope at this point. Just have to BELIEVE!

Our next game to see is a week from this Tuesday when we play the Reds. Taking the in-laws as a present for their 49th wedding annv. Mom in-law is a big fan.

Hey Rob ... did you realize that it was a Cub fan that came up with Stan the Man? Heard this a few weeks ago and thought it was pretty interesting.

Go Cubs!

Dont forget 1969...that was an unforgetable season...especially for da Amazin Mets....rz

Heh...I didn't mention that year for 2 reasons.

1) I wasn't around that year; I'm a '73 model

2) From what I've heard about that year, it's best to forget it anyway...he he he.

BTW, ya'll see the movie This Old Cub, about Ron Santo? Cool, imho!

And the special they had after Saturday's game ... Sandberg: Second to None ... was sweet, too :).

June 23, 1984.

If you don't know that date ... you sure as heck better not tell me that you don't know that date ;).

hey redbird, tell me what you remember about 1964 World Series...what happened in Game 7? that was a tough loss for the Yanks...rz

My most vivid memory is of Bob Gibson, the great Cards pitcher, mowing them down. Though he struggled in Game 7 on just two days rest, he pitched a complete game to win the Series. Gibby was some competitor.

This baseball season is really going full tilt. Dog days of August are upon us. A's and Astros are playing great but the Nationals and Angels and O's are all tanking and Padres are also falling fast. Still alot of baseball left this season. These last 2 Yankee comeback wins vs. the Angels were incredible....rz

I thought it was a Brooklyn Dodger fan. What is the story you are referring to?

I imagine the Cubs must play Cardinals and Astros alot and need to win most of their remaining games to have a chance. rz

1984? sure as heck dont know at this moment...is it something I should know...june 23rd...

those 69 cubs had a bunch of hall of famers...the whole line up was classic and Leo the lip was the manager...i was at opening day in 1969 at Shea Stadium...Mets lost to the Expos..it was the first game the Expos ever played...Mets were 100-1 to win pennant...they had an amazin year and i remember the day they overtook the cubs...late summer...the scoreboard said " Who's #1 " or something like that...it was incredible....dont think anything like it has happened since...and they went on to beat Hammerin Hank and the Braves then Frank and Brooks Robinson and the O's in the Series...Gil Hodges was the manager....rz

I was only eight that year. It was the end of the Yankee Dynasty until the 1976 season. It was crazy how the Yanks fired Yogi Berra after the season and hired the Cardinals manager...and Yanks flopped in 1965....

Do you remember that the Cards got Roger Maris for a few years after that? I remember 67 the Cards beat Bosox and 68 Tigers beat Cards....both were exciting 7 game series...a lot of hall of famers in those games.

I think that Maris belongs in the Hall. rz

Yeah, I remember fondly those two years Maris played for the Cards. He was an all-around team player for them, not so much the home-run king by then. A very good all-around player. Those Cards/Red Sox and Cards/Tigers Series were great ones -- unlike last year's sweep (ugh) by the Red Sox. Nothing worse than four-zip in the Autumn Classic. Oh well, maybe current Redbirds will get a chance to redeem themselves this October.

I think Maris played in both of those Series. He was really a great player. Won MVP I think in 60 and 61. 2004 Series was a real downer for your Cards. They are on pace to get back this year but the playoffs are always tough to get through. Cards got a lot of talented hitters. Not sure of their pitchers though. rz

*chuckles*

If you were in the Chicago area ... or if you were a Cubs fan the summer of 1984 ... the gorgeous, sunny, Saturday afternoon of Sunday, June 23, 1984, with thousands of fans at Wrigley and watching on the Saturday Game-Of-The-Week with Bob Costas (er, I think it was him at the time) doing the play-by-play for NBC, should stick out in your memory ... in some fashion.

Bottom of the 9th, Cubs about to lose ... Sandberg comes up ... and smashes a HR against former Cub and current Cardinal Bruce Sutter to tie the game.

Bottom of the 10th, Cubs down yet again ... Sandberg again ... versus Bruce Sutter again ... same result as the previous inning ... HR to tie the game....again.

Cubs won the game in the bottom of the 12th, iirc.

;)

I know how you must of felt ...in 1976 Chris Chambliss hit a walk off homer to win the playoff series yanks beat k.c. royals...homer was in bottom of the 9th in game 5 of 5 game series...put yanks in series for first time since 1964

and of course you may remember or have heard of bucky dent's mighty blast over the green monster in one game playoff in 1978 to help yanks win game vs. bosox and they then went on to win the series that year....

i recall something about sandberg as you said but i am not a cubbie fan.... i remember ernie banks, billy williams, fergie jenkins, jim hickman, leo the lip, and guys like that...in fact i have a lot of their baseball cards from the mid 60's era....rz

Not to beat a dead horse, but I got a letter in the mail today. Some of you may recall I stated I had heard that Stan the Man came from a Cubs fan. I was worng. Who ever said it was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan, was right.

I Googled and found a site called Stan the Man.com. I sent a email to the webmaster and today, received a hand written note along with copies of pages from a book. It reads:

"I always hit hard against the Dodgers and, the next time we were in Brooklyn, Bob Broeg, up in the pressbox, detected a chant when I came to bat. At dinner Broeg asked traveling secretary Leo Ward if he'd heard. Ward had. "Every time Stan came up," Ward explained, "they chanted, `Here comes the man!" "THAT man, you mean," Broeg attempted to correct Ward. "No, THE man," Ward emphasized. So Broeg wrote for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about the Brooklyn fans' peculiar tribute to Stan (TheMan) Musial. And a nickname was born."

Go Cubs!

Hey Paul N that was me. I am from Brooklyn. I heard that his nickname came from Dodger fan or fans but did not recall the exact story you told. Did I ever tell you that I started the "Reggie Reggie" chant on opening day in 1977 when I sat in the right field bleachers? It is true. I was there Opening Day in Yankee Stdm....rz

Yanks win game 1 v. Chisox

Yanks win game 1 v. Chisox

Yanks win game one

Would like to be there at Comiskey Park to see Yanks play White Sox. These games are very important to both teams. And the Cubbies are still in the race too...though they need some kind of winning streak to move up the wild care ladder.

Oh you Cubbies fans -- have to admire your persistence.

Great rivalry -- Cubs/Cards. I am a Cardinals' fan and have been one since the era of Stan The Man, circa 1950. (New era: Albert El Hombre)

Bob,
Growing up in S. Illinois during the 50's, there was no person, from any walk of life, more highly regarded that Stan Musial. He WAS The Man!

And. . .
The Cards staged a five run rally in the ninth inning last night to beat the Giants. :) :)

Mary,

Stan The Man was (and is) my hero. But Albert Pujols is a worthy successor, considering not only his skills as a baseball player but his good work in the community, especially helping children in need.

And wasn't that rally last night wonderful? They've done that several times this season. And with some of their sluggers still on the DL, the fill-in players help keep them rolling. Fun times! (Okay Cubs fans, I know you took three out of four in Wrigley. Cubbies have been about the only team giving the Redbirds trouble so far this season -- so enjoy for now, Cubbies fans.)

Go Redbirds!

*raises eyebrow curiously*

Wait. You mean WGN wasn't lying about that? When I heard the Cubs had taken 3 of 4 from the Cardinals the other day while I was on the road trip, I couldn't believe my ears/eyes. I figured it was more propoganda from the Tribune Co...he he he. ;)

Course, the White Sox are imitating the Cubs right now ... losing 7 in a row....

*shakes head*

Hope next time you're on one of your great American road trips, you'll hear the Cards have swept trhe Cubs! :D

Yanks Are Moving Up

Yanks Are Moving Up

St Louis has the 2004 World Series on their mind...Yanks have their playoff collapse ...Cubs have their long long streak of losing ...White Sox have 1959.

It's a great baseball season so far. Seems like almost every team even near 500 or better is in the playoff hunt...why even the bad news Brewers are still alive.

Let's see if Yanks can sweep ChiSox today. Ol Randy Johnson will be on the mound in a few hours...Sox seem to have lost their luster...what happened to them...and where oh where is big old Frank Thomas?

rz :)

LOL! That's what I EXPECTED to hear ;).

And, Rob....Sox won today.... :(.
