Dem Yanks are heading to Chi town soon
Da Sox may get a bust in dare ballon
Sox are playing such great ball
Bronx Bombers may start da Sox' downfall

Oh sure dem Cubs may win a few
But win da Series they seldom do
Day dont miss Sosa at all
For da Birds he hardly hits dat ball

Oh Chicago da weather is so dang hot
Dogs days of summer make youse sweat alot
No Windy City cool air today
And come the Fall no ball there to play

Chicago Chicago
Full of what-not
Dem Cubs cant win
Dem Sox are so hot

Da Yanks dey sleep
Dey stay close to the top
Beantown will see
Da Bosox soon flop

Oh Chi- town how I feel for you
Da luv able Cubs dey make you blue
Hope for the Sox this could da season
Get ready fer da Yanks...cause d'are still breathin'

Go Cubbies!

How about Neifi's granny last night to take the series from the Cards!

I think the Yanks have their hands full. Doesn't appear that the + $30M ole' George is payin' in luxury tax is providing the payoff he was looking for!

Yay Rob Z!!!!!

I Love Those Yankees!!!! Whoo Hooo!!! They Are One Classy Team.

George's Horse Didn't Pay Off Either, But I Guess When You Have That Much Money It Doesn't Matter.

Baseball game

Baseball game

My wife and I went to see the Somerset Patriots baseball game tonight. The company has a suite, and every once in a while we get to use the seats, when they're not entertaining clients.

In the next suite was a tall, kind-looking older man, with a ready smile and a love of the game. The fellow next to me said, "That's the most famous ballplayer of 1951."

I ran down to the concessions and bought two baseballs. The I screwed up my courage, climbed over the stantion and waded into the seats belonging to the next suite. The rightful patrons were looking daggers at me as I asked to pass, but I refused to make eye contact, hoping they wouldn't stop me and turn me back out to my own turf. What I was doing was incredibly rude, but it is a fan's birthright to surpass politeness for the long-sought chance to meet a legend.

A little girl from our group was holding a baseball glove, wanting to follow, but afraid. "Come with me," I said, and we plunged through. The old gentleman saw the baseballs, and knew what would follow. Then his eyes hit the little girl with her glove. "Come in here," he said, and we followed him into the indoor part of the suite, where we knew we were absolutely trespassing.

He signed the baseballs and the glove, and we made a grateful and hasty exit. I turned back for just a moment, to thank him and to shake his hand.

The baseballs are made out to my son, Eric and me. Both say, "Best wishes, Bobby Thomson."

Best wishes,

For you young whippersnappers out there, Bobby Thomson belted a home run for the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds in the 1951 National League Playoff against the Brooklyn Dodgers that was called "the shot heard round the world."

Who was on deck? A 20-year-old rookie, who would become my favorite ballplayer of all time: Willie Mays.

Best wishes,

Hey Rob

My heart was in my throat yesterday.....but they pulled it out....Matsui ROCKS!!!!

How neat for you. That will be a treasure to show to the grand kids someday!
My boys would love to get an autograph from any of the players (Cubs of course) and I would probably do the same thing to get one if the opportunity arose. :)

I was not born yet but Bobby Thompson's homer has been shown on tv a million times. He is a nice guy. I was at a Madison Mallards game Friday night and shook hands with Dick Allen aka Richie Allen and Jay Johnstone, two old timers who were probably paid to come out and sign autographs. There seems to be a warm feeling for the oldtimers who were playing when we were growing up. RZ

I would love to see the Cubbies make a run for it...they seem to be bitten by the injury bug this season...Someday I dont know when... I would love to sit and watch a game at Wrigley Field...It is doable since I am in Madison WI. Made it to one game this year at Miller Park to see Yanks lose to Brewers...car broke down along I 94...got there in 6th inning...had good seats...it was fun...they got a Fridays or some other restaurant at the stadium so we hung out and ate there after the game...with a view of the Field...It is really quite a journey to get to a ballgame nowadays with the crowds and traffic and giant parking lots and traffic jams...and long drives...It is like a full day of work of 8 hours from departure to return home...rz

Thanks for the good chuckle! all too true I am afraid.

I did not think they were gonna do it...but they did. Another game is popping up in a few hours...I can only follow it on my computer...which is better than nuttin'. I think this is a good season so far...Each game is important...rz

Great poem!

Great poem!

Hey Robert,

Your poems are always so cool! :) Thanks for sharing with us. Of course I'm standing by my home team no matter what. :p We love to go watch them play, even tho it is a pain, like you said. Now that my boys are out of college we probably won't be in Denver nearly as often. :( That was one of the things we liked to do when visiting them.

Are you and Dottie going to make it to the Las Vegas reunion? I sure hope so.... it's gonna be a blast!! :D

hello rain. i was at coors field in 1998. saw rockies game. very nice stadium and atmosphere over there. vegas seems a bit HOT to drive to. dottie and i made it to rockaway beach n.y. for a few weeks in june...was great to swim in the ocean again....rz

That certainly would be nice. 2003, 1998, 1989, 1984, etc., were awesome seasons, even though they didn't produce the exact desired result....

Sure hope you are able to do that someday soon.... But, fair warning, the atmosphere at Wrigley is different for day games than it is for night games ... so you might want to plan to go twice ... once during the day and once at night ;).

Oh you Cubbies fans -- have to admire your persistence.

Great rivalry -- Cubs/Cards. I am a Cardinals' fan and have been one since the era of Stan The Man, circa 1950. (New era: Albert El Hombre)

Dont forget 1969...that was an unforgetable season...especially for da Amazin Mets....rz
