When I could do things like swim, I went to the downtown Y and they had classes like this. Watching these people throw their babies into the pool and startling them wasn't on my list of good parenting skills, but I have to admit, those babies did exactly what this one is doing in the video. Seems cruel to watch in training, but look at the advantage it gives.

or at least, to float/tread water.....there are no choices on life saving skills.

Many years ago my cousin and his wife had their toddler daughter taught ISR at the grandparents pool in Arizona. They invited their friends to share the class with their toddler daughter because they too had grandparents with a backyard pool. After viewing how the class was done, the friends backed out because they were afraid it would just be too terrifying for their little girl. I saw the videos of my cousin's daughter's final test. She was thrown in with winter jacket and pants on. She immediately floated and started making her way to the edge where she grabbed on and cried and screamed. It certainly wasn't a fun thing for her, but it worked and it was amazing. The very sad news is that one month after my cousin's daughter had her final test, their friend's daughter walked off the edge of her grandparent's pool and drown. It sounds like too huge a coincidence to be true - but I assure you it is.

It truly is amazing on the one hand. On the other hand, does it give the parents a false sense of security or make sport of falling into water for the babies? Ross, I have to agree; I found it difficult to even watch the baby calling, "DA DA". I'd have a really hard time not responding, however, the baby did not appear to be terribly distressed. Kinda bizarre...but maybe not a bad idea as a back-up safety device if one has a pool.

I can't get past when the baby walks up to the pool. It just stops and starts all over again just to that point. Any thoughts?

I didn't watch Ross's post..but I do know..never too young to teach kids to swim.....I wanted to build a pool on our Farm when my kids were ages 2/3...Hubby said he would when the kids learned to swim....We lived in a very rural area..but did find out that there was an Ex-Marine/wife teaching lessons .at local State park. Only pool..so I took them...he made all us mothers stay outside the fenced area...After about 5 days..he took them..one/by one..onto the diving board..and threw them into the water to swim to nearest ladder.. .I about died....thinking they would drown..they both came up and swam to the ladder..After that, Hubby built us a huge pool..We joined a Swim club..next county and they swam for years...6 and under..both kids were in the 1st place...and continued to swim on Swim Teams thru-out Ga...winning many Ribbons. kelp them in a shoebox..so many...Over when they turned age 14....this summer, my daughter did the same thing with my Grands..ages 3/4....both swim like fish.. Now, I can relax when they come to my pool.. I make them stay in the 3 ft. area..Bonnie

Here in Australia many many backyards have swimming pools and the laws governing protection is huge. Each pool must have an approved pool fence surrounding it without direct access from the house.
We made sure our kids could swim before we got our pool. Most babies start swimming lessons at a very young age and our grandaughter was like a fish by the time she was three.
When we have visitors we insist that at least one parent be in the pool with their child/children and it usually ends up with all the guys in the pool with the kids and they all have a great time

Watched the video this morning(can't view video at work). I think it is great!! I lived in Florida as a child and was taught to swim before school age. Some may think it traumatizes the child but many lessons do.

Honestly Cooker, when I watched these parents training the babies, I truly thought they should be jailed for their actions. Some of those babies were terrified and nothing short of it while others were ok with it. In the end, they all learned, but I can't help but wonder what mark was left on some of them.

When we built our pool on the Farm...I had a local man to come into the house to fix a washer?.....(repairman)..he said, see you have a pool..I said, yes. he said, my Mama told me to never go near water until I learned to swim. ..still remember that..had to leave the room so he wouldn't see me laughing.
