Steve,

Pay attention to what your body tells you. Lack of energy or stamina was my biggest symptom until I became very short of breath and had tingling on the left side with exertion. Once it started going downhill, it went fast!

If you start feeling poorly, consult with a surgeon about the timing of AVR. Cardios like to wait until the last minute for some reason - my surgeon told me that my valve was far worse than what they had visualized on either the echo or the cath and that it wouldn't have lasted six more months.

When I look back, my body was giving me all of the rights signals - I just was in denial. You have the advantage of knowing of your condition and all of the knowledge about it that time has given you the luxury of accumulating. Don't ignore it!

Jim, Other than my having a "few more miles on the clock" it seems we are on similar roads. Yes, there are times when I would rather "just do it." I am, however, keeping close contact with my cardio so we can watch the echo measurements and react to any that go out of range. I can deal with the lack of energy for a while.

I'll ceratinly "drop the dime" if anything "really" changes, though.

I think reading all of the advice from other in this forum about "what to do and what to look out for" prior to surgery keeps us on our toes. I know my cardiologist remembers me quite well after all of the informed questions I ask him during my visits. He has been pretty good keeping a close eye on my status so far.

Jim
