Hi all,

I have an occasional nose bleed problem. I do not know the cause. It happens all of a sudden and stops by itself after a while.

Is there anyone who had this before or after the OHS and what was his/her experiance? I am going to have an AVR & an MVR very soon. This is the only concern I have and I am going to discuss this with my cardiologist as well.

I just wated to hear some real time stories, if any on this. Appreciate your response.

Thanks,
Steve

What meds are you taking? When do you have the nose bleeds (AM or PM)? I started post op coumadin 2.5 weeks ago and have lots of nose bleeds. Pre op I was taking low dose (81 mg) aspirin and had lots of bloody bugars (sp?). I'm no expert, but don't seem to have enough info to help.

Steve, I had nose bleeds before my surgery and still have them a few times per year. They usually occur in the winter when the air is dry and cold. Although the nose bleeds take just a little longer to clot and stop, I have always been able to stop the bleed with finger pressure applied to the nose. I have never had to take extraordinary measures such as ER visits for packing, etc. to stop a bleed....and yes, I have been on anti-coagulant(warfarin) continuously for many years.

Thanks guys. I am not taking any meds for nose bleed. I am on Crestor for elevated lipids and a pill to control my uric acid blood leves(gout).

dick0236's experiance is very reassuring. My nose bleed also happens mostly in winter time. It happened in summer time as well some times.

Are there any home remedies/precautions to prevent it?

Thanks,

Colchacine I assume? Isn't gout fun?

Best advice is to get some nasal saline and squirt your nose a couple times a day.

Hi Steve!

This was a big problem for me too prior to my AVR. As a matter of fact, foolish as it may sound, the nosebleeds bothered me more than the prospect of OHS! I, too, found that by pinching the nose steady for about 5 minutes I could usually get it to stop. Not always, but usually. I had the bleeds for about 1-1/2 years before surgery and about 6 months after surgery. I had a St. Jude pig valve in 3/2007 (pretty much because of my nosebleeds. My surgeon preferred mechanical for me - I was 64 at the time - but because of my bleeds, consented to tissue). I knock on wood every time I say this, but I've not had a bleed in 18 months!!! They just stopped, for no apparent reason, and I'm sure this is what will happen with you too.

I might suggest that during late 2006 and early 2007 I sought much advice at VR.com regarding the nosebleeds and got a lot of very good advice. You might be able to do a search of the site to see what some of those responses were and if they could help you. I was very happy to have them and as they were helpful in many, many ways.

I wish you luck. If I can help in any other way, PLEASE, let me know.

I live in Oregon, pretty damp here. Whenever we visit a really dry climate (Southwestern states and parts of California) our family always takes along some saline nasal spray. While I don't really understand how salt water helps lubricate the nostrils, it apparently does. Our oldest son, especially, has these kinds of change in humidity type nosebleeds. He just always thinks ahead, when traveling, or in the depth of winter when the inside air is dry, or during a hot dry spell.

Yes my son, the hospital was quite concerned. We had to go see a specalist and he gave us cream, which helped to stop them.
