Coming up to my first anniversary after arotic valve replacement and bypass surgery. I m told after a recent sonogram that the valve is leaking a little and causing a little blood to run past it. The cardilogist said... "thats nothing to worry about..pretty common" I havent found anything online to indicated that it is "common".
And I am worried. I was wondering if anyone here has that experience after valve replacement.

I had my mitral valve repaired, at first after the repair it was stenoic, now it is leaking a little, but most people's valves leak a little and it's no big deal.

I just saw my cardio and he told me no leakage in my valve but I have definitely heard of others have some. Most say a little leakage is not to worry about.

I have some perivalvular/paravalvular leakage. Had a look-see (TEE) in 2007 & 2009 because of this. I changed cardios in 2009, who ordered a TEE after my annual echo. The 2009 TEE showed no change from 2007.

It is my understanding that Mechanical Valves are designed to have 'a little' back-flow to 'wash' the valve leaflets which reduces the probability of clot formation. You may want to ask your Surgeon or Cardiologist about this on your next visit.

I had minimal leakage at my last echo and the surgeon told me not to worry. I still have my native bi-cuspid valve that was reshaped in surgery. Your stress will do you worse than the valve issue!

Al is right, my surgeon explained the designed-in jets on my carbomedics valve, to wash the leaflets at the hinge points. This is to keep blood from settling and clotting, is my understanding.
