Atena denied coverage of Protime

Atena denied coverage of Protime

I tried near the end of last year to get a machine covered using QAS to handle the paperwork, but Aetna turned me down flat, stating that the there wasn't enough justification for medical necessity. I live in California. Both my wife an I have Aetna insurance, dual coverage for both of us from our companies. My INR has been running on the low side, but not sure if this is enough justification.

I have visions of going through another round of appeal with the insurance company just to have the same result. It's fairly convenient for me to get the Coagucheck from my Cardiologist, which I get about every two weeks. Takes about 45 minutes to an hour total time including transit.

Is it worth paying the money for the unit if you are fairly stable, but want to have another alternative for travel and more frequent testing? I have been running on the low side, went down to 2.0, but on the last check was back up to 2.5 (still below where the cardiologist would like).

Thanks...
