i'm reading reading reading.....he's sure not gonna!
but that's ok, i plan on becomming a heart specialist soon:D and i can take care of him personally then!!!!

hee hee...bonnie, that was the FIRST thing i noticed!!!:D and don't worry, after being a member for almost a year now on the hep bb...NOTHING can scare me!;)

Hi Shirley-

I'm a little uncomfortable with the symptoms Victor is having. I know you said that he has an appt. for later this month, but no matter, maybe you should call the cardiologist and ask if it needs to be bumped up. Chest pain and leg aches, should be seen soon. Blood clots can develop in your legs also CHF can cause edema which can be painful, and at one point caused my husband to have cellulitis, which was extremely painful for him, and took an antibiotic to clear up. It's always better to be safe rather than sorry. If they tell you not to worry, then good, but at least you have all the bases covered. What do the rest of you guys think?

I know I would do that for Joe. And if he got any funny feelings, he'd be whisked off to the ER, pronto.

I agree with Nancy.

I realize your hubby is stubborn and that's ok, but this really doesn't sound too good. I think he should be checked ASAP. ;)

good mornong all!
nancy, ross, i completely agree with you both! but..victor weighs 300+ and i am only 130,...so wisking him off to anywhere is not gonna work! sadly, there is no way he will go right now-it's christmas and he has to make all that $$$. :(
i tried about a million times to tell him that if he is not around, all that $$ is not going to be worth anything at all to me. he listens to me on everything except his health. does anything i ask-except the most impotant thing-take care of himsalf. go figure.

thursday, he goes to have a halter moniter put on? what's that? (and yes i'm still reading, ross:) ) also, i FINALLY got him to sit and read information with me :)
he really is worried about the surgery. he's had traumatic surgery before-a gunshot wound back during the time when there where shooting and robbing cabbies everwhere...so he's a little (no pun) gun shy. but more and more, he's realizing that this is something we have to do go forward with. and we have decided certainly on the mechanical valve and he goes to the v.a.
wonder if they have the new st.judes model?
great day to you all! it's good being here!!
oops, also, victor does indeed get reacurring bouts of cellulitits and has to take the antibi's for it.:(
another question, why is he having to take the coumadin now? and wont he have to stop prior to surgery?

A Holter monitor is a test that allows your doctor to see whether there are changes in the heart?s rhythm or electrical appearance over a longer period of time than can be easily observed during one doctor?s appointment. It is most often done to evaluate symptoms that come and go and that might be related to heart-rhythm changes. Usually the Holter monitor is done over a 24-hour period, in the comfort of your own home.

Even Tough Guys have a bad day! Victor, I'm not talking about being admitted to the hospital, but getting checked out. If you go for the Holter on Thursday, speak up man and tell the Doc what's up. Your woman is worried and so are we! Symptoms like that set off all sorts of alarms in my mind. Hopefully, something will show on the Holter test and make diagnosis easier.

As for why the coumadin now, only your doctor can answer that one. Has he had a stroke, blood clot, or anything of that nature before? They thought I had a blood clot in the apex of my heart and started me immediately on coumadin. The supposed blood clot turned out to be a cyst, which was removed during my AVR in July.

So Shirley, you think the robe is befitting huh? Enjoy, it's only for today. :D

Hi Shirley-

I noticed that you mentioned that Victor had been shot during a cab robbery and that he had surgery for that, and thus is quite aprehensive about the possibility of another surgery.

You won't believe this! There is a relatively new member who also had a gunshot wound, it was through his heart. It happened when he was 12, about 45 years ago. He ended up having 3 surgeries in a row and nearly died. The surgery at that time was crude and his valve was repaired with a piece of some kind of surgical sponge. Surprisingly, this repair lasted 45 years. He had so many horrible memories about this experience that he very nearly didn't have his recent valve surgery and was in a life-threatening condition. At the last minute he made the choice to live, and had his surgery. He'll be out of the hospital perhaps today, or in a day or so.

Look up the threads from LA Cruiser, his name is Marco. He's also in the transportation field. I'm not exactly sure, but I think he has a business that customizes 18 wheelers. The threads are interesting and in their own way, exciting. The best news is that he had his surgery and now has back his life. Victor might like to read those posts. And do look for LA Cruiser (Marco) because he'll be sure to post any day now.

Now for Victor---

I've been dealing with heart valves and related problems via my husband for about 22 years now. Joe had his first surgery a couple of years prior to our marriage.

There is an important lesson that we've learned. Your heart has a mind of its own. It doesn't care if it's a holiday, or you want to earn lots of bucks, or if you really don't want the hassle of the ER or a medical appointment or test. It's gonna do what it wants. And if it wants to act up, it will. It could happen suddenly, without warning. So when you have some symptoms which could be serious, you must get them checked out. There might be medications which can help you in the short term, until surgery is necessary. But once something bad happens, you'll wish you had gotten it taken care of.

We all want our friends to be safe and to have the best life that they can.

So I'm hoping that you'll take Ross's good advice and speak up when you have your Holter monitor appt.

Take care,

ok, 1st off, let me say we are ok here. i'm sorry i / we haven't posted back, but lots of things are going on right now. i'm sitting here with tears in my eyes from the outpouring of concern i've just read. victor decided yesterday not to have the Holter Moniter put on he says because he had to work.
then he decided not to have anything done, including surgery. (somebody shoot me) he has worked all night and is asleep right now but the minute he wakes up, i'm making him read your posts to me/him and it's my bet that once he sees them, he will start to think differently. someone speaking directly to him does have an impact on him. (he is still just amazed at the computer age we live in lol! victor is such a precious man with the deepest loving/caring heart you could ever find anywhere, and i am selfish, and don't want to lose that until absolutely necessary.)
once again, thank you guys for being here.

nice to see your face again ross:p

Victor, what would it take to get you to get checked out thoroughly? If it's fear that's keeping you from going, face it head on. We're all fearful of what we might hear and have to do. My stubbornness darn near got me killed the very first time around when the aneurysm ruptured. Believe me, you don't want anything like that or a heart attack happening. You only have one heart, so take care of it.

Please?

thank you dear,
as soon as he gets up, i will show him your posts. i've decided, if he wont work on this himself, i will spend so much time on the puter and on the phone with the docs, that he will at least have to pay attention. i really feel the posts from you all here will help a great deal though. thank you so much for your concern. it's so appreciated.

fingers crossed

fingers crossed

well, i had victor read the posts to him today. made an impression. we talked about it all day-on and off. he is rethinking and that's a start. i feel like his quality of life will greatly improve from the operation- he is afraid of all the pain after the surgery and also that he may be rendered helpless and or the quality of his life will be lessened.
we are gathering information.....and we continue to move along....... ;)

~shirley

The pain isn't as bad as one might think. They keep you pretty well sedated. In my case, they really overly sedated me. When my aneursym ruptured in 95, I truly thought I was having a heart attack. The pain with it was unbelieveable. I never want to experience that ever again! I guess what I'm trying hard to say is, you don't want something even remotely close to that happening to you and neither do we.

ross/all

ross/all

well, victor and i have both done a lot of reading and are continuing to do so. he is funally understanding how important it is to at the very least, do all the tests and the research so we are not just suddenly caught off guard.
ross, i just want to say thanks for all your input, it has really made an impact here. victor has two appnts. tomorrow, and i won't be able to go with but he has promised to pay close attention and report all. besides, i can always call the doc if i am not satisfied with the report. i am really happy to have found this site. there is a wealth of information here. and support.
again, thank you all.

FINALLY NEWS!!!!!

FINALLY NEWS!!!!!

finally! victor got his pt/inr!!!! (did i get that right!!) inr is 1.84 and the doc wants him between 2-3. sooooooo do we change the coumadin dose? the doc said just stay the same. vic has another appnt 1-2-03. to get another pt. do we raise the level of vitiman k or lower it? or what? any ideas would be appreciated. i am also reading the cute little booklet on coumadin the nurse gave him. :)
hope all are having a happy holiday and merry christmas.
~shirley & victor

Hi Shirley-

Don't do anything on your own re: Coumadin. Just do what the doctor has advised. It sounds as if Victor will be at his range soon. Definitely do not take any extra Coumadin, and do not take any Vitamin K. It would be OK to eat a normal diet, just don't go overboard on those holiday greens.

Victor--

What's this about not wanting to have a Holter monitor put on? Your heart problems just aren't going to go away on their own. Please let the doc find out just what the exact nature of your problems are. It's an innocuous contraption and doesn't hurt, plus it gives a lot of information.

If you finally decided to have it put on, good boy. If not, very BIG time bad boy!!! We want you to take good care of yourself.

Happy Holidays!

Hi Shirley-

Just ask Victor if he would ever run his cab into the ground. I'm sure he gets good mechanical help for it when it's ailing, and it's my bet that they use all kinds of high tech electronic testing to find out what the problem is. His heart is even more important than a cab. You can always get another cab, but if your heart goes???

Your mechanic is your cab's best friend, and your cardiologist is your heart's best friend. Give him a break and let him do his job correctly.-- 'nuff said.

Merry Christmas :)

Nancy, Angel....

Nancy, Angel....

..where did you learn about 'mechanics,' you sound like a pro (just kidding:)?

"Just ask Victor if he would ever run his cab into the ground."

>>>Victor, I'm waiting for your answer.

"I'm sure he gets good mechanical help for it when it's ailing,"

>>>Heart doctors are a God-send

"and it's my bet that they use all kinds of high tech electronic testing to find out what the problem is."

>>>It's incredible, --the high-tech apparatus.

"His heart is even more important than a cab. You can always get another cab, but if your heart goes???"

>>>We can't get THIS SAME VICTOR back Nancy.

"Your mechanic is your cab's best friend, and your cardiologist is your heart's best friend. Give him a break and let him do his job correctly.-- 'nuff said."

>>>Victor, even If you decide NOT to go through this ordeal at least you and your card will have all the facts available in case the little misses convinces you to act upon it at a later date. Go and git all those tests over with.

>>>And as for Shirley, I have a little story on convincing ANY man to do ANYTHING you want of him, yes, even If you ask him 'to jump in a freezing lake, he'll do it ALL FOR YOU, and then some!' (havent you heard the song, "When a man loves a woman?" --on my little story, I don't 'member where I came accross it, but then this is all in page two...)

You (and ya'll, --women) have this power but most don't know how to use it (which is a subject that I'm not knowledgeable in though would like to be, I have daugthers that I would like to impart this info with).

>>>Ross, THX for all those links, what would we do without you?

Happy Holidays, all 365 'and a quarter' of them, and Lord, God, King of kings, Bless all my little angels in this board.
