It's good to see your post, Bobbie. You've come to the conclusions that all of us discovered. Learning about things really does diminish fear and helps you deal with things in a realistic way.

Not everything you will read will apply to your daughter, but reading about even the most extreme cases helps in the understanding of the whole scope of heart valve problems and beyond.

You will be much better prepared to help your daughter for whatever happens in the future.

Monitoring MVP

The most pertinent tests to monitor MVP are the ejection fraction
and the ESD( end systoltic diameter) left atrium. The routine echocardiogram does this very well.

Bobbie,
Welcome aboard. I , too was told that I wouldn't need any surgery for my Mitral Valve Prolapse. Mine was found In April 2002. Just a small leak nothing to worry about. I thought that everything would be ok. It was something lots of people live with. Sure, I was very worried but really didnt understand what this was. So began reading very thing that I could get my hands on and surfing the Web. I began to think that it's no big deal. Well Feb. 2003, I had a bad case of pnuemonia and had to be hospitalized for 10 days. Dr. said I was OK. But something wasn't just right. I wasn't getting better. So tired I was dragging I had trouble breathing couldn't lay flat. Couldn't walk without being exhausted. I was going to Pulmonary Rehab three days a week. The staff saw I was ill. They told me to go get a second opinion. That was right before Easter of this year. When doing some test and an echo this Dr. found that the Valve was leaking severley and I need medical attention fast. I was in heart failure and the valve needed reapired. Thank God that the Dr. took me seriouly and got me refered to Cleveland Clinic where they were able to do the surgeries that I needed. By the way That second opinion saved my live. Dont feel bad when you have to ask questions. Your daughter should keep all Dr. appointments and tell the Dr. when things seem different. I have went thru alot but I thank God that I found a Dr. that cared about my health and not about making a name for themselves. Every time I go to see my family Dr. or my Drs. in Cleveland I tell them that they are my HEROES!!!!My prayers and thought are with you and your daughter and if I can help ease your mind Please let me know. This has been a great web site for hepling lots of people. God Bless You

Thank you all for your reply's and input.

It seems we are doing the right thing by having the echos as scheduled and will be asking some questions about things I have learned here.

I have three daughters- and they are the most precious gifts in the world to me. I try to be of help and guideance to them all- if they ask and sometimes not! We are all very close and there is much support and love. That means everything.

I guess I get a little carried away sometimes because I lost my dad when I was barely 13 and had a lot of other losses due to health related problems. This took its toll on me I am sure - and made me the caretaker I am.

I am working on these issues and try very hard to control the need to fix everything. I know most of it is because I truly love them so much but also by helping it relieves my anxiety and gives me some sense of control. Brother, life sure is complicated!

Thanks again. I'll be in touch soon I'm sure.

Blessings,
bobbie
