Anyone out there that's on Toprol XL tried the new generic version? It's called Metoprolol ER, and it's available at 25mg dosage. It became available late last year. Since generic Rx's are much less expensive for me, I'd love to switch.

really??? i didn't realize they came out with a generic.. I currently take 100mg.. but slowly weaning off.. depending on how my BP does.. that would be awsome if it came in my strength... my copays doubled for brand this year - so what ever i saved by decreasing my overall scripts I made back up with the increased copays

I have switched between metoprolol and toprol xl with no difference in efficacy or any side effects. I am on a 50mg/day dose and tolerate either very well.

I'm on it, 50 mg. a day...no problems (never had the real stuff) but still trying to get the HR out of the 90's now!

These are good comments to hear. I was just switched off Atenolol onto Toporl XL 50mg and after the freebie trial cards get used up, I assume my insurance will only offer me the generic.

I must say, I feel SO much better on this drug than on the Atenolol. I had no idea I was feeling so many symptoms from the Atenolol......sweats (thought it was hormones), very tired most of the time, a general achey-ness......the things we put up with!

toprol xl

toprol xl

I have been on the generic since post op (4 weeks tomorrow, Thursday 2/22) with no problem (75 mg. per day).

I use Toprol XL 25 mg and I found that due to oddness in my insurance Toprol XL is slightly cheaper than the generic.

I have been taking metoprolol for the past year, currently at 75 mg/day,
half in the a.m. , half in the evening.
Lately I am feeling pretty crappy....BP too low for a couple of hours after meds kick in, then BP gets a bit too high at dinner time.
And I do get alot of the hot flashes, could be menopause related...?

Bina,

My hope is that the Metoprolol ER (extended release) will not cause the valleys and peaks in BP that can be associated with regular metoprolol. The generic ER version should mimic Toprol XL, which does not give me the highs and lows in my BP.

I am looking forward to a more stable BP between the 12 hour doses.
Here in Canada we have the metoprolol ER in 25 mg or 100 mg.

My cardio gave me lots of samples of the 100 mg, but now that I'm down to 75 mg I can't use them.....
So I guess I would need to take 3 pills of the 25 mg----expensive!!

went from Toprol XL 50 mg 1 per day to Metoprolol Tartrate

went from Toprol XL 50 mg 1 per day to Metoprolol Tartrate

I just went from Toprol XL 50 mg 1 per day to Metoprolol Tartrate 50 mg every 12 hours. Is this the same medication? Has nayone moted side effects?

When I had A-Fib I was on 50 mg twice a day of Metroprolol (there was no ER after the word) and I was not only lethargic, put I could barely lift my legs when I walked. It was awful!!!

Now I am on Metroprolol again to keep my heart rate down a bit, but this time it is 12½ mg twice a day (the 25 mg pills are cut in two by the pharmacist). It works without giving me side effects (except for very vivid dreams).
