It sounds like Katie is doing well, drawing pictures. I hope it is nothing serious, best of luck. paula x

I want Janet to be my mother.

Janet - would you please! Someone needs to get that boy under control. :D

Waiting, waiting for word this morning. This is like that new Capitol One commercial with the football team following the guy around for his protection. If you feel like something is breathing on your neck - it's us!

You're a great mom!

You're a great mom!

Hi Janet. I know you will get back to us as soon as you can, but we are all on pins and needles.

The only experience I can relay is that my daughter got a concussion at 15 months old. Flew through the air right before my very eyes and hit her head on a bedframe. Goose egg immediately, center of forehead. I called the pediatrician (hysterical). They had me watch her. Told me she would get sleepy. Who can tell, these are little children..... but I let her go to sleep. They said only for 30 minutes then wake her up. When I woke her up she was positively grey looking. She stood up in her crib and started swooning and giggling strangely. I swooped her up and drove (like He**) to the dr. Just a concussion. (just! ??)

As far as Katie goes, I don't really like where she hit her head. Not a good place. My mother, in her 80's, fell and bonked her head. For months and months she didn't realize that she had and experienced several very unsettling events of nausea and weakness -- so much so that she had to be rehydrated in hospital several times. After about the 3rd such event her husband got pissed and told them he wouldn't take her home until they figured out what was causing it. It was a subdural hematoma on the brain. Nasty thing, had to be drained and required a hospital stay.

You have learned much from this life with Katie. Please remember that regardless of what they tell you, your own best instincts are real. Follow through on them. I suspect they will downplay Katie's event. Watch her behavior. If it changes at all (more naps, loss of appetite due to upset tummy all the time, etc.) make an appointment with a neurologist.

I don't know enough to go on any longer. I do know that if you follow through in a huge way on this one, you will have so much more information to go on with the next event......and there will be more! Wait until you get to organized sports in school!! (I'm assuming she has the okay for those eventually)

Good luck good luck!! Hugs to Katie. What a trooper!

:) Marguerite

When I hit my head, not nearly as hard,
and not too long ago, I went to bed but did
report it to my cardiologist and was told to
get an MRI a couple of days later when I was
having 'visual symptoms'. I was also told that
if I had a SERIOUS Brain Bleed it would give me
the WORST HEADACHE I'd ever had.

I had a brain haemorrhage three months ago. It did start with a dreadful head pain and vomiting. I went in and out of consciousness and surprisingly I communicated reasonably well, so it is a very difficult call. I went to ER asap. Patrick

Thumb's up so far..........

Thumb's up so far..........

I did my nightly monitoring duty. Katie was less than thrilled when I woke her up about 4 AM, turned on the lights, and made her count my three fingers. She must have thought I was nuts. Anyway, the bump had gone down slightly this morning. Don called the ped's. She didn't feel like it was necessary to see Katie based on what he told her, unless we felt uncomfortable. (Me? I'd have probably taken her in anyway, but Don is Mr. Mom this year since he retired from Uncle Sam.) The gameplan is to keep monitoring her for any of the previously mentioned symptoms. Even if these don't develop, if the egg is not continuing to get smaller, then she wants to see her. Katie doesn't seem too worse for wear. Wish I could say the same thing about me............sigh! Like Bob, I wonder why these things can never happen during daylight hours!!! Must be in some unwritten kids' Bible somewhere and their 11th commandment states, "If thou art under the age of 18, thou shalt not sustain bodily injury or become ill before 10PM during the week, but anytime on the weekend is fine." Mary, I could really use my butt back, but please don't tell me that it now resembles the pic you sent. EWWWEEE! Yuk! I wonder if the "model" in that pic actually brags about being a "model"!

Thank you all so much for the morale support and input. Truly, my first impulse last night was to take her to the ER, but the memory of our past visit came back to haunt me, and I figured we would end up being there all night with some really clueless people and still not know much. If it hadn't been for you guys prodding me to call someone, I wouldn't have thought of calling Michigan. I'm still going to be nervous for a few more days, but am feeling much better about the situation. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Will try and plug in the holes later, but I need to get my star sax player up to his ball game. P.S. Ross, before I answer that question, are you potty-trained? :D Many grateful hugs. Janet P.S. Phyllis, we had to have another crisis since you were out of town for the last one. Maybe we should start numbering them............ow, just bit my tongue. :D

Janet, sorry I'm a little late here, but just wanted to let you know I'm thinking about the munchkin. I'm sure all is fine, but you're so right, we coumadin patients have to take those head hits pretty seriously. Keep us informed.

Glad to hear things are going okay for Katie. Notice how quickly we end up in multiple pages when it's our little Katielion?

I think you should start tattooing every date on your body for when she gives you cause for concern. Do it in pretty colors and shapes. By the time she reaches her teens she will be horribly embarassed (even more so than she would be without your tattoos). Then threaten to wear shorts and tank tops any time her friends are around. Or better yet - a bikini. (Just be prepared to send Ross a picture).

Relieved to read your post, Janet. Why is it that all crisis happen at night- whether they be health or hurricanes???
P.S. Phyllis, we had to have another crisis since you were out of town for the last one. Maybe we should start numbering them............ow, just bit my tongue.
You're going to cramp my style, Janet- I will be afraid to leave home and the computer if you keep this up!
Give Katie a big hug from her friends in CT and keep up the great mothering.

I think we can ALL relate to your last post Janet and as usual, it is harder on the caregivers than the patient !

I'll take the fact that Katie was 'miffed' at being awakened at 4 A.M. to "count your fingers" as a GOOD SIGN. :) :) :)

YES, I'm sure there is a law writen somewhere that all calamities must happen after 10 pm (what was she doing up so late? ) or on weekends. "On Call" Doc's will surely testify to that :D

I 'ass-u-me' that the Doc / PA / Nurse / whoever in Michigan recommended the 'wait and watch approach'. (TRUE ?)

Today I received a telephone call from the Business Office of my Local Hospital about my bill for the time I went to the ER to get a CAT Scan after bumping MY head...

NO WONDER the Hospital Nurses ALWAYS suggest going to the ER: I was shocked at the amount of my co-pay so I called my insurance company and discovered the Hospital Bill for that little visit was over $4200    To add insult to injury, I also received separate bills from the ER Doc and the Radiologist. EVERYBODY wants to get in on the "Wallet-ectomy"

Out of curiosity, I asked how much was billed for my Upper Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, and Biopsy... 'only' $2400 and you all know where the GI Doc's work. :D NO WONDER our resident Diagnostic Radiologist hasn't retired ;)

Yep, "Wait and Watch" sounds like a good plan
(as long as Katie appears to be in good spirits)

Surely I'm not the only one who's been wondering "How are Katie and Janet doing"?

WELL, I gave in to my curiosity and just e-mailed Janet to see what's happening. ("Curious minds want to know" :D ). She promised to do an update but I've not seen one so I hope she forgives me for 'spilling the beans'.

Bottom Line:

Katie is doing FINE :) :) :)

Janet said that she has been fighting some virus and just stayed in bed most of the weekend.

I'll leave the rest for her to tell when she feels up to it.

I'm relieved to hear that Katie's "goose egg" has gone down without incident.

Ok, Ok..............

Ok, Ok..............

I promise I'm trying............this blasted site keeps freezing up on me for some reason. I DO appreciate you checking up on us Al. It makes us feel so loved.

As Al mentioned, I am the one that's been under the weather, fighting some dread bug of some sort...........and I swear it was NOT because my MIL was visiting. She is a wonderful kind-hearted woman, and it was purely coincidental. Anyway, Katie is doing great. The goose egg is now gone, but a not too bad bruise remains..........even though her hair is so fine, you really have to hunt for it, and she says it doesn't hurt...........but she takes her blood draws with barely a wince now, so who really knows. Her INR came back 3.4 on Friday. I'm trying to piece together my lessons learned for future reference, but am still confused. I gave her an extra half dose of coumadin because she vomited. Then we had the goose egg incident and held her dose by half two days later, so what should I take away from this (besides the bug and the dirty sheets)? Does her INR go up or down from a stomach bug and vomiting? Dunno. What to do next time we have an "egg" incident (which we are most certainly sure to have - we ARE talking about Katie here :D )? Dunno............dunno how long Michigan will take my calls............heehee! :D

I know I sound like a broken record, but many, many thanks to you all. And here's to the next crisis (minor, of course) happening during daylight hours. :D Man yhugs. J. Picture of the Princess follows, if I can get it to load. NOTE: Chair is embroidered with "Princess Katielion." Gina and Phyllis, this is the blasted picture I have been trying to get printed out for our thank you's. Maybe I can finally get those suckers in the mail before the Christmas rush. Hey, whaddya think? Valve replacement poster girl material? A little young for Ross, but still cute as she can be..............not that I am the least bit biased here............. :D All I have to teach her now are the words, ""World peace." heehee! :D

'Course..............

'Course..............

you know getting that last pic was NOT that easy as SHE makes it look.........sigh! Have a bunch of outtakes.............

Gotta flash her Tink panties....................another sigh! Anyone want an early Christmas present........oh, say about 44 inches tall and 36 pounds? heehee! :D Hugs. J.

Glad to hear that all is fine with Katie and so sorry about your stomach bug- hope you're on the mend. The pictures are beautiful- the second one is "true" Katie and makes me smile. Again no need for thank yous, Janet. Katie's beautiful smile is all the thanks any of us need. :)

So glad to hear the incident has ended up being a non-incident. What an adorable picture of a beautiful, spunky girl. You can ship her up to me anytime - if she'll stay in the crate long enough!

The only conclusion you can draw about Katie is that you know more about her than anyone else, Janet. You have to do what your experience teaches you is right. You have learned that when her particular specialist is unavailable, that you are the next best expert.

AWWWW Janet, she's soooooo gorgeous - package her up and send her over here. Her and Clo could create havoc together over here! LOL

Chloes INR does things that don't follow the 'rules' all the time! I've just learnt what to do in various situations by trial, error and experience - and ignoring certain doctors!!

Love Emma

Oh, thank y'all..........

Oh, thank y'all..........

Al, I know this is supposed to be reassuring, but for some reason, it scares the heck out of me............heehee! :D Thanks for the vote of confidence............and your site........first place I checked, of course, then cried out to the rest of the "family" here.

And Karlynn, Emma, and Phyllis (yes, I'm not letting you off the hook either), if I can work out the logistics of this, I could just keep Katie circulating around to each one of you for a while and y'all can send her back when the little lioness is tamed...........heehee! I'm just afraid CPS will come knockin' if I padlock her crate shut. :D Much love. J. P.S. Thanks, too, Chris and Paula for the kind words. I totally agree............. :D

What I meant that may not have come across was that for the "little everyday emergencies" you are the expert. What you are learning is how to tell the difference between when you can handle it and whe it truly needs professional help. When you do go to the ER, I'd be right up front with the doctors that your experience has been that few doctors have known what to do with her so you don't go to the ER until you realize that it is something that you have not dealt with before.
