NO. . . I'm not pregnant, LOL

I wanted to post this as a new topic so I dont hijack Bob's thread, and I thought this was funny, I decided yesterday to get a puppy, didnt even know about bob's thread, and I'm getting a boston puppy!!! (from a local breeder, AKC elegible) I'm so excited, I need a companion!!! does anyone have any experiences with bostons? I like them cause they kinda have a big dog mentality in a very compact body, and have heard they are laid back family dogs, etc. . .

I cant pick it up till november because they are only 1 week old right now, so that will give me time to get ready. . . my other "problem" is that I am at a loss for names, any ideas?

thanks

Don't do like an acquaintance did with a blue Abyssinian years ago -- she named it Smurf!!!!!!!! She had gotten it from a mutual friend, who nearly barfed when she saw "Smurf" entered in a show catalog.

I'm sure you'll find a good name. Check with the breeder for suggestions, too.

In the meantime, you'll want to get ready for a "new arrival" and check into obedience training. We've only had one dog, and we did NOT take him to obedience training. If we ever get another dog, I definitely will go the obedience training route. It's important for a dog to learn his/her limits and know proper behavior, and it makes for a more rewarding relationship with the dog.

You may want to peruse bookstores for a good book on puppy and dog care. Perhaps Agilitydog & Evelyn may have some suggestions, since they are into dogs.

The one thing I remember about our Sandy's puppyhood is .... housetraining. (UGH!) You'll want to get lots of advice on that.

be sure to take her out really often until she 'gets it'. meantime, use doggie pads and put her on that often. make sure she knows you are the BIG BOSS o/w she will take the lead and it's hard to get it back. we have a new dog and needed to do all this stuff. she's a shihtzu-poo and quite a handful. very active and determined little thing but such a pleasure.

you will have a ball. and you will have a bunch of names before you make the final decision.

happy days ............

Names eh?
The first that came to mind was Jennie or Rudy. I've always like Maggie too.

Bina is right, puppies are a lot of work. Make sure every time puppy wakes up, you put it outside and bring him/her in after they have done their 'duty'. Do this same routine after they eat and drink too. I had litter puppies that were house trained at 5 weeks - meaning they knew what "outside" meant and "do it" when they got to their corner of the yard.

Good luck and have fun with your new puppy.

I've had boxers Jennie (Jennifer May) and Maggie (Magnolia May).

I loved Abby (Abigail) for a name for a Boston Terrier, as it's for Abigail Adams, a great Boston Lady, and Bostons can be such ladies (when they want to be). It's a wonderful name, and we can't use it again; so use it, if it strikes you.

There's Cookie, and Penny (for Penelope). For boy puppies, almost any bully name will do it. They've got that great miniature bulldog look to them, and it just highlights their big-dog attitude.

They are short-haired, and do need protection from heat and cold. They are not very tall, so you will have to shovel them a path sometimes in the winter, as the snow will go right up to their little business, making going outside particularly challenging for them.

I've loved Boxers and English Bulldogs all my life, and wouldn't ever trade the time I've had with them, but I am truly smitten with the Bostons. I expect to always have a Boston with me until I'm gone.

Enjoy the anticipation and have patience with your puppy and his or her little bladder when you finally bring one home. When very young, you must be careful of their eyes during rough play, as they are somewhat vulnerable until their heads sort of grow into them.

They're tough little dogs, and as a puppy, no bigger than my shoe, Abby got into some kind of trouble, and Pat leaned over to her and wagged a finger at her in disapproval. Being so tiny, she backed up as you would expect, then backed up again, then screwed up her little courage and sprang forward and nipped Pat right in the nose. One of the bravest acts I've ever seem. We both dissolved in laughter, of course, but Pat and I were impressed. She never did anything of the sort again.

They will play until they conk out. As a tiny puppy, we were playing with her on the bed, and she leapt over my arm and landed eyes closed, completely limp. We honestly thought she had somehow died. Actually, she had fallen asleep in mid-leap.

Their teeth are tiny, and remain quite small (although viscious-looking) even when they become adults. While playing, we figured out what they are especially suited for: they are perfect for stripping the meat off of your finger-bones during rough play.

Enjoy this puppy. He or she will be the ride of your life.

Be well,

Each of my late brothers had a Boston when they passed away. They were subsequently adopted by another family member. The female's name was Maggie May and the male's name was Poppy.

Congratulations!

Congratulations!:)
We have been without the companionship of a dog since our poodle, Molly, died at the age of 15.
A month ago, our son got a dog for our granddaughter, and we have been dog sitting ever since. I had forgotten how lovely it is to keep company with a being who loves you unconditionally, but it is.:)

Your thread caught my attention! First, congratulations. Hopefully your breeder will send photos once a week! This will help with the wait time.

I know how you are feeling. We are picking up our puppy (after a long wait) waiting lists, then the birth, then more waiting, etc. This weekend is it! Will see if I can attach a photo of Bella :). She's a mini-goldendoodle. Mini meaning she is not to exceed 30-35lbs.

Take the advice Marsha was giving. Classes and more classes! We are signed up and she has not stepped one paw in the door!

Enjoy!

Bella is adorable. When we get together you can show me all the pictures you've taken since you got her! What will that be? 2 weeks! :D:D

Thanks Deb and Lorraine. Can't wait!

She seemed really sweet when we selected her. Favored my daughter. Which is important. Want her to like kids. Also back and fourth between the two of us and stayed by our side. The others just kind of wandered off or were too aggressive.

Bella could be carried around on her back..which told me she is submissive and should be easier to train. Hope so!

Sorry, did not mean to hijack your thread! Just one excited mama to the another:D
