Actually Rob, I have been on Metoprolol tartrate and I have a huge history of depression, and haven't had any problems with it. I take 25MG BID of metoprolol. I couldn't afford the brand name, Lopressor. WHat I spend $7 per bottle for costs $127 as Lopressor. TOo much. I also take aspirin, Midrin, and penicillin daily. I guess it's different with everybody, right?
I am actually studying to be a pharmacy tech now.

This may or may not be related to the Metprolol tartrate, but I have to keep the temperature at least 75 degrees or I feel cold. And I sleep with a down comforter and wearing thick socks. That was definitely not how I was pre-surgery.

The Shiatsu massage was successful at stopping neck pain. I still have some sore and stiff muscles, but they don't bother me quite as much. I'm going for another session tomorrow.

Hi Alan-

Prior to having his mitral valve surgeries, Joe would be exceedingly warm all the time, and he would sweat profusely. The heat would really bother him and even though I would be freezing because the temp in the house was so low, he was still hot. One time he had the temperature down to 60 degrees, and he still wasn't cold.

After his mitral valve was fixed, he no longer sweats and has a normal reaction to temperatures. He does get cold once in a while now.

Maybe you're experiencing a similar thing only a little more pronounced.

Toprol XL

Toprol XL

Hi Alan,

I have been having similar problems with regard to feeling chilly and sometimes just plain old cold. I put a lot of blankets on at night to get warm, only to wake up sweating an hour or so later. Then I start taking the comforter off, etc. Of course when I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, the cycle starts all over again.:)

I am taking Topril XL, 50 mg once a day. One of the side effects listed in the pharmacy info states "Because beta-blockers reduce circulation to the extremities, your hands and feet may be more susceptible to the cold. Dress warm."

I wear a sweater around the house all day, which seems to help. The night chills seem to be getting a little less each day, except I had ice cream last night before going to bed and I was shivering by the time I got under the blankets.

I asked my cardiologist last Friday about this symptom. He said it was possiblely related to the Toprol XL, but it should ease up as I adjusted to the medication. Anyway, he said I'd probable only be on this med for another 2 months or so.

I view this as a minor annoyance. Everything else is going great!! I'm only 3 weeks post-op today and I feel better every day.

Here's hoping that your recovery goes smoothly and the these relative minor problems don't change your positive mental attitude.

Johnny: Man!, you must feel like molasses sometimes with all the Toprol you have to take!? A whole tablet just about knocks me out

The Toprol has actually made me feel better with much less fluid retention, swelling, etc. and less fluid in my lungs. I think my heart is doing a better job with the reduced pulse rate. I even have a suspicion that cardio dude with raise my Toprol to buy some more beats, since I'm tolerating it so well.

It was really only bad in the first 2 weeks or so; just found out last night that my hypothyroid condition has progressed a bit (again) so that may actually account for the tiredness I've been feeling. Another med change....bleeeaaah

Hee Haw!

This is the ONLY place where you can figure some stuff out.

My husband always had a sort of normal reaction to temperatures, but about two years ago, he started being "hot" all of the time. We would often have discussions about the temperature in the house. It was SO bad last summer, that the exterior of the house developed mould on it, from the air conditioner being run on such a low temperature 24 hours a day. (He was at home, waiting for surgery).

Now, he takes 75 mb. of attenenol daily. Initially he was always cool to the touch, and actually placed a blanket on himself when watching TV. That seems to have improved. (Maybe that was when he was takking 100mg.....I don't remember).

So you've helped me figure out why the drastic variation in how he reacts to the house/car temperature.

I can say, that I'm much more comfortable now. Heehee. And, the elec. bill this summer probably won't be as high!!!

Best wishes to ALL!
