Well, to make a long story short, I've not been feeling well at all. Had numerous symptoms - cough, low-grade fever, night sweats, severe abdominal discomfort (couldn't sleep or eat). . . you get the picture. Wednesday evening it was bad enough that I knew there was no way I would be able to sleep, so I called my cardio. After discussing symptoms with him, he said not to panic, but the symptoms "could" be endocarditis, and that I should get to the ER asap to have it evaluated.

Well, we drove the half-hour to the hospital where my surgery was done and went in through the ER. I was admitted and subjected to days of tests. Blood cultures for endocarditis, echo, abdominal CT-scan, TEE, dozens of blood tests, you name it. For most of the next few days, I felt miserable and was again stuck in the hospital.

The immediate conclusions:
1. NO evidence of endocarditis. Valve is fine, no vegetation, no issues noted.
2. No heart or valve issues noted.
3. Severe constipation. I was given "industrial strength" laxatives, which almost immediately freed up everything.

So, we believe that I was just very significantly affected by the meds from surgery, causing extreme constipation that ordinary diet, fiber and OTC laxatives could not resolve. With one dose of the heavy-duty stuff, I feel much better, although weaker because I wasn't eating much for several days.

I'm home now, and trying to get back on the track to recovery. I see my cardio next Wednesday and will discuss rehab and work with him. Crossing my fingers. . .

We are going to send you some of our Honey Bran muffins, I ate some every day because I know just how
bad constipation can get and how sick it makes me feel. So sorry that you had to deal with this.

Steve
Dang guy, someone needs to give you a break.........you have had a rough recovery :( Glad you are back home, and the problem was resolved. Be sure to drink plenty of water, and maintain a diet with high-fiber foods. Include beans, whole grains and bran cereals, fresh fruits (One cup of raspberries, at 60 calories will help get things moving with 8 grams of fiber. Papaya helps prevent constipation. Papayas contain papain, an enzyme that helps digest proteins. ) and vegetables such as asparagus, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and carrots. Dr Oz actually had an expert on GI issues ( constipation) suggest we elevated our feet while using the bathroom, on small box, for example, he suggests it makes us in a more of a natural squatting position , which allows for easier defecation. Yup, I put a box in my bathroom, as part of preparing my house for post- surgery.... as I know, constipation can be a very serious issue, as well as uncomfortable.
I can see from your posts, your a very positive man, and will soon be past all these bumps you have had to endure..... your a survivor ! Sending you caring well wishes and my best....

Oh Steve, that's such a bummer. So frustrating when you just want to get on with your recovery. Take heart (ha ha) from the fact it wasn't anything serious (even though you felt terrible) and you can now move forwards.
Good luck, Allison

Steve, I'm sorry you continue to have problems. I hope this was only due to constipation and nothing else turns up. I remember well those days and weeks immediately after surgery when I felt particularly vulnerable to everything. It was, in many ways, a scary time. Hopefully, you are past that now and will start getting your confidence back in your health and strength. I wish you well.

Holy Crap

Ohhhh bad pun! So glad it was an elimination and not a heart issue! You will be lighter on your toes and dancing with the spring flowers. Good job on getting yourself checked out.

I'm sorry you had to go to the hospital and I'm sure had so many fears for a few days, but glad everything was checked out and the laxatives helped. I'm glad you went and got checked, better safe than sorre especially after OHS when so many things can get very serious quickly.

IF you ever have surgery again and will on pain meds for a couple weeks, be sure to tell everyone about this, so they can give you prescription laxatives daily. Justin's last few surgeries they started him on them about the 2nd or 3rd day post op, and he had to take them until a couple of days after he stopped his last narc pain med, even when he just needed 1 at night. I think it really helped. I don't know if they do that for all their patients, or maybe just the ones that are slower starting to go, I didn't ask.

Hopefully all the bumps are now 'behind " you :) and you feel better each day.

Geesh Steve...so sorry to hear of your latest set back! I too remember so well, especially after my 3rd, how bad I still felt for months after. And yes, constipation can wreck havoc on your system and make you feel terrible.

I hope you start feeling better real soon and get on with your life. Will keep you in my prayers!

Sounds like lots know what constipation is all about. I'd like to know what that "industrial strength" laxative was, just in case, since, you know, don't never want to deal with that again...

Sorry to hear you were back in the hospital, Steve, but happy to hear it was resolved for you. I certainly hope that this is the last of your bumps in the road and the rest is smooth sailing!

JimL - The stuff they gave me was a variety of magnesium citrate. It was mildly carbonated, super-strong lemon tasting. I had to mix it with water to be able to get it down, and it tasted really salty. Worked like crazy, though.

That's what is given before a colonoscopy! Actually, when I travel to Europe, I get so blocked up that I have to buy magnesieum citrate and take it. It's that or dynamite! I won't even get into how bad it was when I had the surgery!!

You beat me to it but here goes anyway lol.

Steve this latest bump in the road sounds like a chitty situation. There I said it. :D

Seriously I'm sorry you had to be readmitted and go through all of those tests again. Having had endocarditis I know they aren't fun...especially the blood cultures. We just have to keep riding the bumps out and they will get better.

I've had a couple more in the last 2 weeks. My heart has been pounding and it is driving me crazy. I checked BP and pulse...pulse is fine but BP is up quite a bit from right after surgery. Upped my metoprolol (on my own I am bad) and it has helped some but i still get the pounding sensation, especially when going to bed. It has produced insomnia so there are my latest bumps...increased BP and insomnia...getting maybe 5 hours sleep at night (I am not a nap person) and my body wants about twice that. I have cardio appointment Tuesday so hopefully we will get it worked out.

We are in this together buddy and we will get over that last speed bump soon. Funny thing is I can walk 2-3 miles at a time and no pounding. It is mostly when sitting or laying down. No fun. :mad2:
