Cardiodentist???

Cardiodentist???

Hi, Nadi! Sounds like pretty good news. I'm going to show my ignorance - why do you have to have your tooth done before surgery? And how did they find out?

Hi Georgia

Hi Georgia

That's not ignorance!! I didn't understand until the Dr. explained it to me. Since I have a tooth that is cracked and decayed( I hate going to the Dentists and it didn't hurt):D He wants it out/fixed before surgery in case there is any infection, since infections esp. from the mouth like to go to the valve and can cause infection of the valve which can cause death :) That is why after surgery when we need any kind of procedure i.e. dental or colonoscopy or any other surgery we have to take anti-biotics before hand.

Thanks for info

Thanks for info

Appreciate that - but how did he know you had a bad tooth??? Is that routine? I don't remember any questions about dental care, etc., when I was falling apart. I think it's a great idea to get the tooth done before surgery.

Although I'm not phobic about dental work (I save that for heights, doctors, and needles), I can understand how you'd let a tooth go if it didn't hurt; have done that myself in the past. Unfortunately, it's always a bad idea, I've found . . .

Well, good luck. Hope this won't be such a big job it pays for a caribbean vacation for the dentist.

Encouragement

Encouragement

Nadine,

I just wanted to add my encouragement. I am five day post-op and have been home a day. Reading everything I could prior to the surgery made all the difference in the world. It truly is amazing how this surgey is so routine these days.

Hi Nadine

Hi Nadine

I do hope your Cardiologist gave you a script for Amoxillin 500 mg... You must take 4 of the pills..ONE HOUR before you go to dentist..If not, be sure and ask for a script from your dentist and fill early so you will have them on hand before your dentist appointment. This is standard for all of us valvers...Bonnie

Got it

Got it

The dentist called it in today. Going to get them in a few mins
I sure am glad he asked because it didn't click with me.
Thanks

Still waiting!!

Still waiting!!

Hello all!

Just an update on the waiting!!

I called the surgeon right after I had my tooth pulled like he told me to so he could schedule it for early next week. I never heard back from him or his ofc so I called them today. The Dr. had left a message for me that he would call me "the first of the week" The nurse said it may even be Tues or Wed since he is on call this weekend. argggg:mad:

I was so happy to begin with that I didn't have long to fret and worry! Now it's more waiting. I wish the Dr's would get it together. They only good thing about the delay is more time to read :D :D I sure have learned a lot in the last couple of weeks.

I am kinda worried about the coumadin(SP?) since the Dr felt a mechanical was the best choice fo me. I love green veggies!

Thanks for letting me ramble!

Hi Nadine-

Sounds as if you will be on your way soon. The surgeon has to get you on the hospital OR schedule, make sure there will be room for you in the ICU and then he has to get a time when all of his team is available, including the anesthesiologist. It's quite a feat of scheduling on the surgeon's part to get everything together, that's probably the reason for the short delay. My guess is that lots of people he needs to contact have taken some holiday time off.

You will hear soon after the first of the week, I'm sure.

Let us know how things go along.

Postponements and delays are a pain, aren't they? We have seen them from time to time. Makes the wait worse. Just keep on readin and before you know it you will be there.

On the coumadin thing, there are so many here who must use it that you will have any questions literally answered before you type them! God bless

Do Not Rush your destiny when it comes to surgery. Be happy at all times and know that it will happen at it's appointed time. I got sick just before my first surgical date. During the wait to reschedule, they found something suspect with my clotting factors and the time off helped to get that checked into. The show will go on. You can count on it!

Coumadin is not a Big Harry Ugly Monster (I have one in a box with 3 little monsters too). You can have your green veggies and anything else for that matter, but you must be consistent from day to day in your intake of Vitamin K. It's not that bad when you get in your therapeutic range. You'll soon be doing things like it was natural to you. You'll enjoy your food almost as well as you always have, but you may need to watch how much of those green veggies you eat per day. ;)

Coumadin

Coumadin

Warfarin is the generic name..cheaper but works the same..made by Barr. No use in worrying about it..It will take several weeks after surgery and you going in for a blood draw or stick..for them to get you regulated. Then, you will take a pill a day (Mg. to be decided on at that later date).. Live life just as you did before. (No bungee jumping, :p )...and not a lot of green veggies at one sitting.:D Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones (I am) that my Cardiologist approved a home testing machine. NO more lab work. If you want a Kitty get one now..Ross and I looked liked we had been in a Briar patch when we got ours last Fall.:p :p They love to use your legs and arms for a climbing tree. Ouch..Now that Ross is a Grandfather to 3 kitties..   Bonnie

Needles YUCK!

Needles YUCK!

I am dreading the weekly/monthly sticks. I still don't like needles but what is a person to do? :D

At least with the delay I do get to spend Easter with the grandkids. I just wish the weather was better.

Thanks again for the encouragement

Nadine

In April of 1995, I spent Easter in the Cleveland Clinic after my first surgery. I remember pleading with the Doc to let me go home before Easter, but it was not to be. Lets just say that it gave me a whole new perspective on spending time with family on this holiday. ;)

Hopefully, you can get a home protime monitor and won't need to get stuck. That's my wish for you anyway.

A very special Easter for you

A very special Easter for you

Look at it this way - you'll feel a lot better this Easter than you would have if you'd had surgery last week. And next Easter you'll be all better and healed. Seems like excellent timing to me! A special Easter gift.

I never thought I'd be able to have blood work sitting up. And I can - I think I might even be able to have a shot without lying down. Chemotherapy & related bloodwork didn't cure me of my phobia, but this one did. It's a crash course, m'dear.

Enjoy this weekend with your little ones.

Coumadin a walk in the park

Coumadin a walk in the park

Nadine - While you are waiting for you doc to get back from the golf course, spend some time and read all the posts in the Coumadin section. The more you learn about it, the more comfortable you will be. A lot of the testing facilities use a finger stick method of getting a small amount of blood, and this is very painless. VR.com is very fortunate in that we have an expert on Coumadin monitoring who follows the posts in the Coumadin section. Al is great, and can answer your questions easily. He has published a book with all the information that is also contained on his web site. I'm a lover of green vegatables too, and I really haven't felt deprived. I just don't eat huge amounts on any one day. Sometimes when my IRN (the measure of coagulation potential) is high, I'll cheat a little and have a large salad as this helps bring the INR down. One of the things you will learn from Al and this is serious stuff - is that you are much better off to be a little high with your INR than to be low. Being high may mean that you could experience a little longer nose bleed or something. Being low, could really be serious. Hope this helps. Chris
