Everyone,

I e-mailed some of my grade school classmates to tell them about my upcoming surgery, and included the date, surgeon and hospital. Here is one of the replies I got back (relayed through another classmate):

-------------------------------

Please pass on to Dale that Dr Hiratzka is the BEST! Dr Hiratzka is a hero to our family. My Dad was referred to him by some of the most respected nurses and physicians I know. 1 1/2 yrs ago, my Dad had open heartsurgery at Bethesda North for aortic valve replacement... and under the circumstances, it was a great experience for our whole family. I don't usually rave about hospitals or doctors unless I am impressed. After 19 yrs of nursing experience, almost all in a surgery setting, I can say I was impressed with everyone.

-------------------------------

Needless to say, this kind of endorsement from someone I know personally is a BIG emotional boost. And to think, I wouldn't have received it at all if I hadn't contacted my grade school classmates (who were, I'll admit, fairly far down on the "people I want to tell list")! It just goes to show that you never know who's got personal experiences to share, and that you find people in the most unexpected places (like web forums :D ).

I would say that is a fantastic endorsement of your surgeon. Just know that you are in good hands. These talented surgeons have special gifts that are used of God. We are very blessed to be living in the times we do - I just typed a note this morning (I am a medical transcriptionist) on a woman in her 70s whose father died in his 40s of congenital valve disease - many years ago when they weren't even thinking of replacing or repairing valves - we are very lucky. :)

You are going to be fine. Prayers and good wishes will be sent your way on the 27th.

I think your great sense of humor and dry wit will get you through this with flying colors!
