Discovered this site yesterday and have been pretty much glued to it ever since. I only wish that I had it found sooner as it would have surely eased some of my fears over what's coming up. I have MVP with moderate to severe MR and the left side of my heart has become moderately enlarged. I'm scheduled for MV repair or replacement (my surgeon is pretty sure it's repairable after seeing my last TEE) August the 8th at Loma Linda University Medical Center here in SoCal. I'm asymptomatic and in relatively good health for my age (I'm a avid bicyclist). I've actually put this thing off for a couple of years (with my cardiologist's OK) due to job related issues and the fact that I'm a big chicken. Now, the surgeon says no more delays or I might not be around much longer. Still really apprehensive about having to have OHS, so it was a Godsend to find this site as I'm already starting to feel a little less anxious after reading some of the posts from those of you in or having been through the same situation. I realize now that this fear is a given and that I'm going to have to deal with it best I can. I'll be on this site a lot in the next few weeks and would appreciated any helpful hints and your encouragement to get past this. Thank you.

Thanks Big-Chuck, I will do that. Hope your recovery is coming along well. Hey, since you live close by, we should meet at the Mission Inn for a drink or coffee when we're able. Beautiful place, especially during the holidays.

welcome to VR. The more you read, the more confidence you will get that all is going to be well for you. No question that it's MAJOR SURGERY, but you can get through that. They will take very good care of you at the hospital. Please stick around, ask any questions. Someone will have the answer you need.

Welcome to the site-

My husband's the one whose been through three valve surgeries. I do his research for him. He hates computers.

One of the best things you can do to reduce the fear of surgery is something you have already started to do, and that is to read every thing you can about the surgery, until your eyes are almost falling out. At first, it will be hard, and as you continue on, you will find that this surgery is highly perfected and that the surgeons who do this are extremely skilled at what they do. And you will be taken care of by the best that the hospital has to offer. Pain is well controlled.

You will only be in the hospital on average 4-8 days. That's not a long time at all. Sure it will take a while to heal, but this is one medical problem that has a fix.

Welcome to VR.com. I am 6 weeks post op of a mitral valve replacement. This website gave me so much information before my surgery and its members were all there cheering me on before I went in. It seems like a rollercoaster ride of emotions you will go through, but be strong and have trust in your doctors and surgeon and ASK QUESTIONS!!

Well, my surgery was re-scheduled today for Sept. 19th due to some family issues. Of course, this was done with the surgeons OK as he agreed the 1 month delay should be no problem. Just wanted to thank all of you again for your support and encouragement. I'm really impressed with how knowledgeable you all are about our condition and I've really learned a lot in just the short time I've been on this forum. And I plan on learning a lot more if you don't mind be bugging you. It sure has helped!
