Just a question, are people with mitral valve repairs put on coumadin for awhile? I know that if you have a valvl replacement you are but I'm not sure if for a short time you are even with a replacement. Thanks to everyone for helping me with all these questions.

Kandice,

If I remember correctly from my meeting with Dr. Patracek (or maybe it was my cardiologist), if you get a repair, you still need to be on blood thinners for a short time.

Off to Nashville

Off to Nashville

Well I am leaving in the morning for Nashville, I have my pre-op scheduled on Friday, then party on the weekend, then a TEE for Monday. The big day is Tuesday.

I am having alot of mixed feelings, I feel irritated with everything . I wish this was a bad dream. But I also just want it over and to wake up and say wow! I made it . I can't wait to start getting my life back to normal.

I will try to email when I can and give updates.

Thanks again to all of you. Best of luck jgibson,, you are welcome to come by the hospital if it won't scare you too much.

Kandice,

Please Private Mail me your contact info so I know who to ask for when I swing by. Wasn't sure if your name was Kandice, or if that was just your screen name.

I'm headed over to St. Thomas Hospital in the morning for my heart cath (just south of Vandy), so that will be another thing out of the way.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Kandice:

My husband had arrhythmia after his MV repair in May and was put on warfarin. His INR has been stable -- he's taking 7.5mgX7. He goes back to the cardio and our PCP in November, and they'll see if the arrhythmia has resolved. If so, he'll drop the warfarin.

On your other post about insurance authorizing 3 days hospitalization: That's probably a routine number, but it is awfully short. My husband's insurance authorized I think 4 days, and he was in 7 days because of the arrhythmia and also lymphedema. The surgeon & hospital dealt with getting extensions. His co-pay was $100/day for 5 days, so that's all he had to pay for his room/board/etc. He had already met his deductibles earlier in the year.

I had a mitral valve repair was on Coumadin for 3 months. It is a precautionary measure while the repair is healing.

I had OHS two weeks ago today to replace my mitral valve with a mechanical. I had severe regurgitation and felt very fatigued. Since my surgery I do not feel the fatigue and have to pace myself to recover since I feel so much better than before. I still get tired and need to nap but nothing like when I had the regurgitation.
Good luck with your surgery, you will see an improvement.
Phil

I needed this too! Thank you!

Kandice, you're going to get through this. I'm thinking of you. Going through the same emotions.

I know you have already left, but I wanted to answer this anyway. I was not put on Coumadin after my surgery, and from what I've seen on this site, I don't think it is very common. I was, however, put on Plavix for six months. My surgeon didn't have any scientific data to back it up (his quote exactly), but from his experience thought it reduced the amount of scar tissue buildup.

From the first time I saw my surgeon, he said "3 months on Coumadin and then baby Aspirin after that for the rest of my life". I actually ended up on Coumadin for almost a year after the operation because my cardio is ultra prudent and was afraid I would go back into A-Fib. I have read things on the Internet also that said 3 months on Coumadin. So, I guess it depends on your surgeon and on your particular case.
