Well still all good news! Laura continues on her strong recovery with really no setbacks to complain about.

Laura really enjoys hearing all the messages being left by you guys so keep them coming! The kids are looking forward to visiting mom this evening and I think that will be a huge spirit lifter for her as well

Yesterday they got her up and walking around yesterday afternoon (down to the nurses? station and back) her heart responded well (steady rate etc.) She did not go for the second walk last night due to some dizziness related to the mixture of drugs they have her on. They continue to make adjustments and we seem to be very close to having that under control. At this point they want her up walking at least 4 times a day and will have her do stairs before she leaves.

The highlight of Laura?s day yesterday was the receipt of her ?Shumsky Heart Pillow? from the hospital! Following open heart surgery and while the sternum is healing it is imperative to hold a pillow on your chest when you cough sneeze etc. to prevent popping the sternum back open. She had heard about these heart shaped pillows on the valve replacement forum and was really hopeful to receive one.

It has been raining hear all week and this moring ws the first time we have seen the sun in a while and I don't know if it is the cow in her or what but when I arrived at the hospital I was amazed to see Laura so independent being able to get up out of bed without assistance and heading off to the bathroom by herself and back. It makes me very nervous like watching your kid walk for the first time but I know it is important for her recovery as well as her own ego. (Why do cows lay down in the rain?)

The surgeon was in today and informs us based on what he is seeing thus far it is possible she could be going home tomorrow if not Friday. That being said the cardiologists nurse practitioner was also in and warned us in her experience day 2 of recovery (today) is normally one of the hardest (harder than day 1 of recovery), with far more pain and discomfort.

For those of you wanting more detailed info?
Yesterday afternoon they also removed her chest tubes. I had a mistake in my previous post as she actually had 4 of them which were Y?d into the two larger tubes I saw. It took quite a while to undo all the tape and the stitches holding them in. After that she was told to take a deep breath and hold it and they then immediately pulled all 4 out at the same time and then had her exhale. Laura was very surprised at how painless this was she says it felt weird like snakes being pulled out but not really painful. These chest tubes were about ½ inch diameter clear tubes went in about a foot or two with ¼? holes along the length (every few inches) to drain the fluid around the heart and also by watching the output they could verify that there was no leakage (internal bleeding). Now that they are out Laura is far more comfortable as she could feel the tubes poking around inside and it is also now lot easier to breathe.

So glad to hear how well things are going! I had my last chest tube in until my last day (day 5) so I am very jealous! I can definitely relate to the snakes! Tell Laura to keep up the good work.

Great progress! We feel more human once the tubes and wires are out. :)

Oh yeah I forgot about those she still has her pacing wires hanging out? With an Pacemaker/Defibulator already onboard not sure why she needs those but I keep forgetting to ask the Doc.

Also when they pulled the tubes (there was a student there) and they stated since the insicions that were made for the tubes were so small in this case they would not have to stitch them?

Great to hear how well Laura is doing.
Thanks for the updates.
Please send my best wishes. Remember to take care of yourself during all this.

My first OHS, I had three chest drainage tubes and my second OHS I had four. None of them had to be stitched when the tubes were removed.

Hey Matt,
Again give Laura a big kiss for me. Yes the tube incisions once they heal will just leave a small line across her tummy. No big deal. Just tell Laura to take it easy and not overdo even though she might feel like Wonder Woman.

And from a bovine valver I believe that laying down in the rain deeps our feet from getting any more muddy than they already are;) Additionally be careful since when you pass a field or meadow, Laura may want to stop for a snack;)

Oh yea, you remember to get some rest also. Cause you will get to be her hero once she is home.:) God Bless You Guys

Glad to hear the news is so good. Keep the the good work, and do not let her overdo it!

Thanks for the updates, Matt. If she has the tubes out she's probably past the worst of it. Most of my pain came from those dang tubes pressing into me. And if they can get the dizziness reduced, she'll be doing great. Glad to hear she's able to get in and out of bed ok. That can be a real challenge with those hospital beds. Hope things continue to go well for her and we'll look forward to more updates.

This is great news and all the best in her continued (boring) recovery
WAY TO GO LAURA!!!!:)

Glad to hear the good news that Laura is doing so well with her recovery. Seeing the family is always a great refreshment to recovery. Hope she is able to enjoy that special time. Pray she continues to feel better and get her strength up daily. Thanks for keeping us updated.
Crystal :)

Matt: you're doing a great job as a newsman/liaison--I think we're going to have to make you post even when Laura's back to telling her own story.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop. I think knowing that she was doing so well helped to sleep through the night for the second time since I've been home. She probably doesn't realize what an impact she's had on her fellow forum members, so give her a big juicy smack on the cheek for us. Great going!

Matt, thanks for the continued update. Yes, I am so glad to hear how great Laura
is doing in recovery. This is my first time to follow someone from right before though
recovery on this forum, tell her she is a great encouragement. Laura

CONGRATULATIONS you are over on the other side!!! Glad your doing well. Remember not to let them rush you out, if you need more time let them know, a 5 day stay is only an average ,everyone is different , hospitals are now trying to run like factories but they forget people are not machines.
